Silver Tea will benefit new library
Vernonia citizens have been
fortunate through the years in
having a public library available
to them since the early 1920s.
One of the first things identified
during the period when the
Oregon-American Lumber Co.
mill was established, was the
desirability of a public library.
Accordingly, in 1925, a small
library was established. A
board of directors and commit
tees were appointed to “adver
tise, solicit books, subscrip
tions, money, and the general
support of the people of Verno
nia.” Space in the City Hall was
set aside and a librarian was
appointed.
Through the years, exten
sive support, both financially
and physically, has been freely
given by local citizens and
groups. It was once customary
to sponsor cofioes, teas, rum
mage sales, flower festivals
and other events to raise funds
for the library.
Vernonia Study Club mem
bers were active supporters
from the beginning, by spon
soring a “silver tea” or “coffee”
almost yearly. This became a
welcome social activity among
the ladies and gentlemen of the
community.
Vernonia Senior Center
By Patricia Olson
We had to do it, didn’t we?
We bragged about the mild
winter we had and how we got
very little cold weather and a
lower rainfall. Now look what
we did! We are having January
in May and I, for one, am not
liking it one bit. But this too
shall pass and warm weather is
close at hand (the weather
man told me to say that).
We are pleased to an
nounce that oral prayer at
lunchtime has been reinstated
by a majority vote of the peo
ple. On days there is no one to
lead in this, a time of silent
prayer will be observed.
Starting Monday, May 15th,
we are asking you to bring in a
baby picture of yourself. We
can’t tell you why just yet. Be
sure your name and address is
on the back of the picture so
we can return it after we use it.
Give it to Willie at the front
desk.
Anyone may purchase a flag
to be displayed on one of the
20 foot poles that line the Av
enue of Flags around the
cemetery.
The cemetery beautification
committee is accepting dona
tions for the monument. To
make a donation, contact
Cindy Naillon at Vernonia City
Hall, weekdays from 8:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m., or cemetery care
taker Synda Allen on Memorial
Day weekend.

needs to take care of some
family situations and is unable
to continue at her post. Also,
we are still offering a position
for janitorial work. This will re

would provide some senior or
teen with extra pocket change
for just a wee time investment.
