Exciting competition at Sunset includes some thrills, mishaps

the back stretch and the beau
tiful coupe of Steve Webb end
ed up in the wall. Apparently
Mark Bell’s car was damaged
in the altercation as well, as he
was not a factor from this point
on. Lemley took command on
the restart with Gerry Grossen
in tow. The two pulled away
from Dash winner Tom Willie
as Dave Bax climbed to fourth
in Dave Hufford’s machine.
Suddenly, in the closing
laps, Lemley’s mount began to
smoke. Whether the smoke
was related to Lemley’s spin in
turn four or not is unknown, but
seeing a yellow, new leader
Grossen slowed. While the
flagmen watched for Lemley to
get back under power, Willie
closed on Grossen. A yellow/
checkered ended the event as
Willie slipped by Grossen at
the line. Dave Bax finished in
the show position, followed by
Dan Shaw and local driver
Dale Blake.
Chris Wilkins won a nine car
qualifier for the PHRA Main,
leading flag to flag. Pro Dash
winner on Opening night, Mike
Kelley finished second, chased
by fellow heat winner Bob
Painter, Jeff Quinn and Van
Raden.
McMullin, who had dominat
ed the PHRA opener, stretched
his lead to eight car lengths,
while first Quinn, then Van
Raden displaced
Painter.
Quinn’s competitiveness was
nothing short of amazing in
light of his late afternoon an
tics... in one of the first hot lap
sessions of the day, Quinn had
climbed a wheel and cart
wheeled his car right out of the
ballpark!
Back in the present, the
lapped car of Wilkins’ spun di
rectly in front of McMullin. With
no place to go, McMullin
clipped the #44 and ended up
on his side. A red flag was
thrown and McMullin’s bid for a
repeat was over.
McVae set the pace with
nine laps down, Quinn, Van
Raden and Painter applying
the pressure. Painter then
looped in four and on the
restart, Van Raden subdued
Quinn. The balance of the
event was green. Van Raden
spotted daylight beneath Mc-
Vae’s coupe and powered by.
Nick Adams methodically worked
his way to the front, eventually
getting as far as third. The bat
tle-weary Quinn had to be sat
isfied with fourth while Jack
Mires rounded out the top five.

had floated back out into the
stream and was just starting to
go down the middle rapids. We
soon realized that there was
nothing to do but for me to
chase it down with my kayak.
Quickly, I was back in the water
and flew down one of the better
rapids of the trip as I looked for
the wayward kayak. Coming
around a bend in the river, I
was relieved to see the kayak
doing a nice eddy turn into
calm water, just as if it had an
experienced kayaker aboard.

Soon Troy and I were laugh
ing about the experience, yet it
had reinforced two rules of
kayaking. One: Always beach
your kayak high and dry. Two:
Never kayak alone.
After a quick refreshment
stop, we were back on the wa
ter and traveling upstream
though two rapids. Unfortu
nately, Troy caught a boil that
spun him sideways and he did
a slow roll as the power of the
river grabbed his kayak. We
were in a side eddy and, fortu
nately, the water pushed Troy
toward the bank. Soon he was
on shore, draining the water
from his boat as the sun con
tinued to bathe us in its
warmth.
We were a little disappoint
ed when we saw our take-out
come into view, for we were
both game for more excitement
from the unknown river that
flowed below us. We knew,
though, that we would continue
our 100 mile adventure to Ne
halem Bay next week, with an
other ten mile section of the riv
er, with the certainty that the
river will continue to get faster
and wilder. This is what draws
us back, for we have caught
the white water bug.
