Thoughtless backyard burning may be hazardous to your health
O utdoor burning of yard de
bris and household garbage, or
“backyard burning,” is an easy
way for Colum bia County resi
dents to dispose of trash. How
ever, it can be a nuisance to
neighbors, as well as a major
cause of health and environ
mental problems.
As smoke wafts through res
idential neighborhoods, back
yard burning is the source of a
common com plaint received at
local fire districts. Breathing
toxic air po llu tan ts can in
crease your chances of experi
encing health problem s rang
ing from throat irritation to can
cer, em physem a or reproduc
tive disorders.
W ith im proved pollution con
trols on the nation’s municipal
w aste incinerators, backyard
burning m ay be one of the
largest sources of these air pol
lutants. According to a recent
EPA report, household trash
burned in one backyard barrel
may release more chlorine-
containing pollutants to the air
than tons of trash burned by a
m unicipal w aste incinerator
serving tens of thousands of
homes.
Wood burned in fireplaces
and stoves produces very
sm all am ounts of pollutants
com pared with trash burned in
barrels, because of the pres
ence of chlorine in garbage
tha t con tains plastics, food
wastes, and bleached paper
products.
If you are going to burn, get
a burning permit from your lo
cal fire district and make sure
that it is a burn day. Burn dry
material during daylight hours,
safely away from houses and
trees. Burning of organic food
waste, plastic, rubber, asphalt
shingles, tires, and other mate
