PUBLIC NOTICE
NOXIOUS VEGETATION
Between May 1st and September 30th of
any year, no owner or person in charge of
property shall aliow noxious vegetation to
be on the property or in the right of way of
public thoroughfare abutting on the proper
ty. An owner or person in charge of proper-
ly shall cut down or destroy grass, shrub
bery, brush, bushes, weeds or other nox
ious vegetation as often as needed to pre
vent them from becoming unsightly, from
becoming a fire hazard, or in the case of
weeds or other noxious vegetation, from
maturing or from going to seed.
The City is willing to abate the nuisance on
a particular parcel of property at the re
quest of the owner or person in charge of
the property for a fee sufficient to cover the
City’s abatement costs. Even in the ab
sence of such requests, the City may abate
all such nuisances 10 or more days after
publication of the 3rd Noxious Vegetation
Public Notice and charge the cost of doing
so on a particular parcel of property to the
owner or the person in charge of the prop
erty, or the property itself.

A public meeting of the Budget Committee
of the Vernonia School District 47J, Colum
bia County, State of Oregon, to discuss the
budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2000, to
June 30, 2001, will be held at the school
district office, 475 Bridge Street, Vernonia,
Oregon. The meeting will take place on the
4th day of May, 2000, at 7:00 p.m. The pur
pose of the meeting is to receive the bud
get message and to receive comment from
the public on the budget. A copy of the bud
get document may be inspected or ob
tained on or after May 4, 2000, at the
school district office, between the hours of
8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. This is a public
meeting where deliberation of the budget
will take place. Any person may appear at
the meeting and discuss the proposed pro

CITY OF VERNONIA
REQUEST FOR EXPRESSION OF
INTEREST IN LAND PURCHASE
AND DEVELOPMENT
The City of Vernonia requests expressions
of interest in purchase and residential de
velopment of a residential zoned 20-acre
parcel of City-owned land in the northwest
comer of Vernonia City limits. Minimum bid
that will be accepted is $400,000, but the
City will consider all reasonable offers. Ex
pressions of interest are desired from ex
perienced developers interested in devel
oping a quality residential development.
The City envisions a development to in
clude conditions, covenants and restric
tions that limit buildings to single-family res
idential, stick-built homes with minimums of
1,200 square feet and lot sizes of at least
7,500 square feet. All residences are to
have enclosed garages, and quality siding
and roofing. The City will consider phased
purchase of the land over a 3-year period
with possible right to extend. A minimum of
1/3 of the total purchase price to be paid
with the first acquisition. The property offers
a scenic view of the Rock Creek Valley. City
services are available to be extended to the
property.
The purpose of this meeting is to receive
the budget message and to receive com
ment from the public on the budget. A copy

Obituary
HARVEY L. “BUB” REDMOND
Harvey L. “Bub” Redmond, 78, Alo
ha, died April 6, 2000, at his home.
Graveside services were held April 11
at Willamette National Cemetery, Port
land, with Chaplain Gordon Van
Antwerp of the American Legion Aloha
Post #104, officiating.
Harvey Leonard Redmond was
bom January 6, 1922, In Birkenfeld, to
Harley and Addie (Lane) Redmond. He
was raised and educated in Birkenfeld.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and
served on the USS Hull and USS
Rowan for six years, until his discharge
in 1947 at the rank of Chief Water-
tender.
He married Nora Jean Vike in 1943
in San Francisco, Calif. They made
their home in Vernonia until 1968,
when they moved to Aloha.
Mr. Redmond worked as a mechan
ic for Jim Davies at Vernonia Auto for
twenty-six years. He then owned and
operated his own auto shop, located
within Don's Auto Shop, for several
years. In 1973 he went to work for GTE
as a shop manager in Aloha; he retired
in 1987..
He was a member of the American
Legion Aloha Post #104, the Forest
Grove Elks Lodge, and the Pearl Har
bor Survivors from Portland.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, Sonoal, and two sisters, Nola
Clemens and Reba Larson.
Survivors include his wife; two
sons, Harvey Leonard II of Kelso,
Wash., and Russell R. of Forest Grove;
a brother, Arion “Buck” of Bend; four
grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to
the WWII Memorial Fund, in care of
American Legion Aloha Post #104,

arrangements.
JOHN M. BURAK
John Michael Burak, 72, died April
14, 2000. A mass of Christian burial
was held April 17, 2000, In St. Pius X
Catholic Church. Interment was in
Willamette National Cemetery.
Mr. Burak was bom Sept. 30, 1927,
in Throop, Pa. He grew up in Pennsyl
vania and was educated in New York
City. He served in the U.S. Army during
World War II. After college, he played
professional baseball for the Portland
Beavers and Salem Senators.
He lived in Pendleton for 22 years,
where he was a city councilman. He
worked as a physical therapist in pri
vate practice.
Mr.' Burak taught at Banks High
School for three years, was head
coach of the baseball team, and also
coached football and basketball there.

He wrote a book called “There Goes
My Achin’ Back,” published in 1975.
He was a member of the church.
Survivors include his sons, John J.
and Bradley; daughters, Vicki Lakel,
Kim
Kintz,
Marge,
Susan
Bartholomew, Maria Huppi and Betsy
McLeod; sister, Pauline Pierce; and six
grandchildren.

MAXINE L. RIGHTMIRE
Maxine Laura Rightmire, 83, Forest
Grove, died April 11,2000, in Hillsboro.
Funeral services were held April 14 at
Donelson, Sewell and Mathews Mortu
ary in Hillsboro. Interment was in Val
ley Memorial Park, Hillsboro.
Mrs. Rightmire was bom December
9, 1916, in Hampton, Neb., to Joseph
and Mabie (Fritz) Stout. The family
moved to Oxford, Neb., where she
completed her education.
She married Raymond Rightmire in
1939 in Oxford. They moved to Port
land in 1941 and she worked as a
welder in the Vancouver shipyard dur
ing World War II. They moved to Aloha
in 1951 and she and her husband
owned and operated Baseline Coin-Op
Laundry in Hillsboro.
Mrs. Rightmire also had worked at
Our Lady of Peace Retreat House in
Aloha for more than 10 years, and at
Bird’s Eye Cannery in Hillsboro.
She was a member of the Baptist
Church in Aloha and taught Sunday
school.
Survivors include her children, Mar
lene Jones of Tracy, Calif., Laura Kem
per of Banks, Robert of Beaverton, Jim
of Newberg, Allen of Aloha, and Alice
Blakely of Vancouver, Wash.; two
brothers, Dr. Kenneth Stout of Benkle-
man, Neb., and Darrell Stout of Beau
mont, Calif; two sisters, Shirley Pond of
McCook, Neb., and Donna Stout of
Holdridge, Neb.; 17 grandchildren and
17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded In death by her
husband in 1975, and by two brothers,
Dean and Lloyd.
Remembrances are suggested to
the American Diabetes Association,

Maximilian Irvin “Max” Doblie, 92,
Portland, died April 4, 2000. A memori
al service was held April 8 at St.
Michael’s Lutheran Church in Portland.
Disposition was by cremation.
Mr. Doblie was bom October 28,
1907, In Concordia, Missouri, to Mary
(Bruns) and Max Gebhardt Doblie,
then mayor of Concordia. At an early
age he moved with his family to Port
land and attended Benson High
School.
He married Bertha Grimm in 1942.
During World War II, he served as a
Pharmacist's Mate with the U.S. Navy
In the South Pacific. He worked in the
shipyards before the war. After the war
he worked at Matthiew Drug, Broadwill
Pharmacy, Tom Benson Glass and
Tektronix. He retired in 1974.
He was a former member of Trinity
Lutheran Church, then St. Michael’s
Lutheran Church, a member of the
choir and a soloist.
He was preceded in death by his
brothers, Delmar and Omar, and his
sister, Mildred Lundstrom.
Survivors include his wife; a step
son, James Buxton of Vernonia; four
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren;
a nephew and a cousin.
Remembrances are suggested to a
charity of choice.
