tricts and county chambers of

nations for the Teacher of the
Year Award for 2000.
Students and community
members are asked to nomi­
nate those exceptional teach­
ers who have gone above and
beyond the call of duty in their
jobs. Eligible teachers must be
working in a Columbia County
school.
Nomination forms are avail­
able at school offices, Cham-
bera of Commerce, and the
Columbia Center. An on-line
nomination form may be ob-
tained at zww.columbia-cen-
ter.org.
Completed
nomination
forms may be left at the same
locations or faxed to (503) 337-
1183. The deadline for nomina­
tions is May 8, 2000.
The Teacher of the Year
Awards will be presented at the
St. Helens/Scappoose Cham­
ber of Commerce First Citizens
Awards Banquet on May 25.

Vernonia Head Start registration
Head Start, a federally fund­
ed pre-school, is seeking stu­
dents for the 2000-2001 school
year. Applications are being
taken from all three and four
year olds.
Prospective students must
have turned three before Sep­
tember 1, 2000. Children must
be from low income house­
holds, or have a disability and/
or special needs to qualify.
Head Start incorporates a
total family program that in­
cludes nutrition, education, and
medical and dental services for
the enrolled child. USDA ap­
proved meals are served.
Training on various subjects
and on-the-job training is of­
fered to all enrolled families.
The program is open to chil­
dren regardless of race, sex,
creed, nationality, or disabling
condition.
The Vernonia Center is lo­
cated at 500 California Ave.
Families who live in Mist,
Birkenfeld and Vernonia may
call 429-9243 for more infor­
mation and an application.
Head Start is an agency of
Community Action Team Inc.,
serving Clatsop, Columbia and
Tillamook counties.

Prizes await winners of essay contest for seniors
How does an educated vot­
er benefit a Democracy? How
can we increase the interest of
young adults in the voting
process?
These questions are the
topics of an essay competition
for graduating high school sen­
iors in Columbia County.
Sponsored by the Columbia
County League of Women Vot­
ers, the contest includes $750
■<
worth of prizes - $400 for first
place, $250 for second, and
$100 for third.
Entrants must write an es­
say of 500 words or less on ei­
ther of the topics listed above.
Essays must be submitted no
later than May 15. Judges will
not know who has written the
essays and winners will be an­
nounced by the end of the
school year.
Students may contact their
counseling office for further in­
formation and rules of the con­
test.
The mission of the League
of Women Voters is to educate
people on the various policy is­
sues facing citizens today. The
League studies statewide is­
sues each year before taking a
position or making recommen­
dations. The League cannot
endorse political candidates.
