End near to recycle milk jugs for school fund raiser Banks Arbor Day activities planned
The deadline for collection
of empty, clean, capless milk
jugs will be April 15th at 2:00
p.m. in the parking lot behind
the old City Hall, 919 Bridge
Street, Vernonia. These will
benefit Kindergarten through
Second Grade in a contest
called Recycle and Win. The
school that collects the most
gets a great discount on m ate­
rial plus free freight on a Rain­
bow plastic play structure. The
transfer station will receive the
jugs this Saturday, April 8, for
the last time.
Organizers report that 1,650
jugs have been collected to
date, and are encouraged by
the com m unity’s support.
In a separate collection
drive, the Labels for Education
program is ongoing, and allows
the school to earn free educa­
tional and athletic equipment.
Look for reminder symbols on
C am pbells products; labels,
lids and UPC symbols may be
deposited in collection contain­
ers at Vernonia Sentry Market,
Vernonia Senior Center, Ver­
nonia 76, or you can send them
with your K-2 child to school.
Arbor Day will be observed
in the City of Banks with two
events on April 8.
At 10 a.m. there will be a
tree pruning clinic with Loren
Radford, a certified arborist
and professor of landscape
technology. Those interested in
learning the right way to prune

Doernbecher Children’s Hospi­
tal in Portland.
This year, D oernbecher
W eek will run from April 17-21,
and
several
events
are
planned. There will be a week­
long “penny war” between the
classes of VHS, ending with
the class that has raised the
most money getting to keep
their prize.

tive from each class compete
for the titles of Mr. and Mrs. Do­
ernbecher. Out of^he eight par­
ticipants, two will be crowned.
Admission is a minimum dona­
tion of $1, but larger donations
are welcome.
Prior to Doernbecher Week,
there will be a raffle. Winners
will be announced at the Do­
ernbecher pageant.

March 18, with plans for a July
