NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

tion for zone amendment and annexation
of certain property. The Planning Commis
sion will also consider preliminary approval
of a planned development for the proper
ties listed.
A public hearing will be held on March 20th,
2000 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chamber Room at
Vernonia City Hall, 1001 Bridge Street, Ver
nonia, OR.
The purpose of the hearing is to discuss a
weight limit ordinance with interested per
sons. A copy of the ordinance may be ob
tained at City Hall between the hours of
8:00 a m. and 5:00 p.m.

in Vernonia, w ith Father Tim M ockaitis,
Priest M oderator, officiating. C on clud
ing rites and interm ent follow ed at B ux
ton C em etery.
Mr. Schm idlin w as b om June 27,
1911, in Buxton, to A lb ert J. and Judith
Lena (M eury) Schm idlin. He grew up in
B uxton and attended Braun School. He
m oved to Vernonia in 1932.
In 1985 he m arried Patricia Allen in
St. H elens, and they m ade th eir hom e
in Vernonia.
He w orked in dairy farm ing th ro ug h
o ut his life, first on the fam ily dairy farm
located on N ehalem H ighw ay near
S toney P oint Road, until his fa th e r’s
death. He then operated it until he re
tire d
in
1975. H e a lso p icke d
pinecones, w as a trap pe r and w oo d
cutter.
He w as preceded in death by tw o
sisters, Bertha Schm idlin and Anne
Braun.

Mr. H edin w as born D ecem ber 17,
1916, o n the fa m ily h om e ste a d in
C herry G rove, to O la f and C hristina
G u s ta v a (H e d e in ) H edin. H e w as
raised and educated in C herry G rove
and G aston, and graduated from G a s
ton H igh School in 1935.
He m arried Jean Lorraine Dintel-
m an in 1938 in Vancouver, W ash. T he y
lived at C am p M cG regor, a logging
cam p outside o f Vernonia, until 1943,
w hen th e y m oved to C herry G rove.
Mr. H edin w orked in the tim be r in
d ustry o ver tw e nty years, beginning in
1935 w hen he started bucking and
falling tree s w ith his father. He also
w orked fo r O regon-A m erican Lum ber
C om p a n y in V ernonia, A lder C reek
L um ber C om pany and D iam ond L um
ber C om pany. In the late 1950’s, he
started w orking as a carpenter at Pelo-
q u in C o n s tru c tio n in P o rtlan d and
w orked as a ca rp en te r until his retire
m ent in 1980.
He w as preceded in death by his
w ife in 1987, and a brother, R oy H. in
1993.

M rs. Adam s w as bom M arch 4,
1925, in Paw huska, Okla., to A rthur
and R atha (Hunt) W illiam s. She grew
up in O klahom a and C alifornia.
S h e m a rrie d R ichard A d a m s in
1943 in San Francisco, and they raised
th eir fam ily in C astro Valley, Calif. In
1969, they m oved to the N ehalem Val
ley.
Mrs. Adam s w orked in a beauty
shop in Seaside and later operated her
ow n shop out of her hom e in Vine
M aple. She also helped her husband
w ith his trucking business. She retired
in 1992.
She w as preceded in death by her
husband and a grandson.
Survivors include tw o daughters,
Lola A ld e rso n o f Vine M aple, and
R atha M cC abe o f Soulsbyville, Calif.; a
son, C arson o f Union City, Calif.; a
brother, R obert W illiam s of H ayward,
C alif.; six grandchildren; seven great
grandchildren.

L a w re n ce W ie se , 85, G e arha rt,
died February 27, 2000. A m em orial
service w as held M arch 7 at the A sto
ria G olf and C ountry Club. D isposition
w as by crem ation.
Mr. W iese w as bom O ctober 7,
1914, in Portland to Edward R. and
Susie (Yunker) W eise. He graduated
from C ottage G rove High School and
attended business college in Portland.
He w orked a t O regon Am erican Lum
ber Co. in Vernonia for 12 years and,
later, at Kappler Lum ber Co. in M ulino.
H e m arried M ary Konzich in 1946.
In 1964 they m oved to G earhart, w here
they ow ned and operated Bud's Drive-
in and M otel fo r 10 years before selling
the business and retiring in 1974.
He w as preceded in death by a son,
Edw ard, in 1977.

D oug o f W arrrenton; tw o g randchil
dren.

W illiam E. W alton, 71, G aston, died
M arch 5, 2000, a t Tuality H ospital in
H illsboro. A graveside service w as held
M arch 9 in Fir Law n C em etery in H ills
boro.
Mr. W alton w as bom M arch 10,
1928, near Salem , Ind., to W illiam and
E sther (Hoggott) W alton.
He m arried Jeanne R. N icholson in
1951. T hey m oved to O regon in 1955
and lived in Vernonia for 15 years.
T hey had lived in G aston since 1972.
Mr. W alton w orked at Long Bell
Saw m ill until it closed in 1957. He then
w orked at Kaiser Gypsum Firtex plant
in St. H elens for 11 years, and w as a
d um p truck and log truck driver for
C row n Zellerbach In Vernonia for tw o
and one-half years. He subsequently
w orked at H aley’s Foods in H illsboro
fo r 12 years, until ill health forced his
retirem ent in 1977.
He w as preceded in death by a
daughter, a sister and tw o brothers.
Survivors include his w ife; sons,
A rthur of D onald, and Tom o f G aston;
daughter, N ancy M cG innis o f Iowa;
brothers, K enneth o f Polk, O hio, Avey
and Robert, both o f Lafayatte, Ind.; s is
ter, C atherine Lasw ell o f Lafayette,
Inc.; five grandchildren.

R obert Leo W ard, 55, Timber, died
Feb. 24, 2000, at Tuality Forest G rove
H ospital. D isposition w as by cre m a
tion. Private services will be held at a

Mr. W ard w as bom Jan. 11, 1945,
in Los Angeles, C alif., to Leo and M arie
(Haubert) W ard. He w as raised in Los
Angeles before m oving w ith his fam ily
to Tulsa, O kla., w here he com pleted
his education.
Mr. W ard w as a painting contractor
and w ood fin ish er for m ore than 15
years, and had a reputation fo r detail
w ork on V ictorian-era houses. He w as
a past chapter president o f the n atio n
al association o f the rem odeling ind us
try and a m em ber of the N ational A s
sociation o f H om ebuilders. He was
also an ordained m inister o f the U ni
versal Life C hurch in Tulsa.
In 1983, he m arried H elen C rane,
and they lived in the Tulsa area. She
died in 1992.
Survivors include a son, John of
Tim ber; tw o daughters, M ary o f Tim ber
and Misty, last nam e and location u n
known; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. H ochstein w orked as a se cre
tary at R eedville Elem entary School fo r
m any years. She w as a m em ber o f St.
A n th on y’s C atholic C hurch and the
C overed Bridge Society.

m arried W illiam A. D oyle; he died in
1929. She la te r m arried G len J. Fuller,
w ho died in 1941, a fte r about three
ye ars of m arriage.
She m arried K nox “Tom ” Phelps in
1945, in Los A ngeles, C alif. They lived
in Los A n ge les until m oving to Forest
G rove in 1958. Mr. Phelps died in
1970.
