VHS boys seek top golf season with seven veterans
The Vernonia High School
boys golf team began their
season in early March.
The nine-member team in
cludes seven returning golfers.
Seniors Matt Brookins, Steven
Potter, Bryan Dinger and Brian
Robertson are back for another
season, as are junior Brass
Sears, and sophomore Joey
Strand. Sears and Strand have
both made improvements in
their golf game over the winter,
according to head coach
James Brookins.
“For the past two years, we
have placed 10th in the state

hope to move up," said Brook
ins.
Team goals for the season

Loggers field a
big track team
The Vernonia High School
track team is bigger than ever
this year, according to veteran
coach Mel Nice.
“I started coaching track at
Vernonia in 1970. We had a
turnout of about twenty mem
bers, and the average for the
past thirty years has been in
the mid-twenties,” he said.
“This year, we have 46 stu
dents out for track. If we do
nothing more, we have already
broken a school record.”
Among the 46 track and field
team members are seven re
turning, including three state
performers. Senior Stephen
Serafin in the high jump, Colin
Plews in the long jump, and
Maryann Miller, state champion
in last year’s 1500 meter race.
The season begins April 6,
at the Catlin Gabel Relays.
“I am excited that we may
score high as a team,” Nice
said. “Also that we may fill a
pizza parlor after a meet.”

Reiko is a social worker. He
also has two sisters, 19 and 22

“Omiya is the largest city in
the Saitama prefecture, but it is
not the capitol,” he said.
When it comes to school, he
said, they don’t have to change
classrooms for each class, and
“We don’t have homework,” he
said with a smile.
After he returns to Japan,
June 17, Nagashio says he will
regain the weight he lost during
his time wrestling, and he will
have another year of high
school before he is done.
“I have enjoyed living with a
family that I have never had a
relationship with before,” he
said. One of his favorite experi

been making weight for

losing weight was going to be

Vernonia High School’s
baseball season began with
practice on March 6, and their
first game is March 16 against
Gervais.
With 16 team members,
senior Arron Forster is the lone
returning player. “We have a
young team,” commented head
coach Dave Doubrava. “Of our
16 players, 10 are freshmen or
sophomores.”

the team has been practicing
since March 6.
There are four girls on the
Lady Loggers golf team, and
coach Joe Strand is confident
their season will go well.
“This season will be great.
The girls will do super,” he said.
There is no season sched

set for April 7, against Tillam
ook at Tillamook Golf Course.
Joining the Vernonia team
are three students from Jewell
High School - Eddie Olstead,
Jon Luttrell, and Mitch Wood.
At present, the 20 games
scheduled include 18 league
games but, Doubrava said,
they are trying to schedule
more
non-league
games.
League play begins March 30
at home against Corbett.
“I think we have a long way
to go,” Doubrava said, “but I
am optimistic that we’ll get
tougher as the season goes
on.” Doubrava anticipates that
the Warrenton Warriors will be
the Loggers toughest oppo
