Betty Jo Mead’s long in­
volvement with Home Exten­
sion was recognized Jan. 17
with a 50-year membership pin
for Home Extension participa­
tion. Lois Engstrom, past chair
of the Washington County Ex­
tension Advisory Council, pre­
sented the pin at the regular
meeting of the Manning-Buxton
Extension club.
The club is part of the Ore­
gon State University Extension
Service, which provides train­
ing and support for local
groups. Mead has held every
office in the club over the
years, and served on county
committees. She has been ac­
tive in 4-H and the County Fair.
She still goes to meetings, but
now enjoys having others pre­
side and lead the lessons.
Mead started the local Ex­
tension in 1948, as a young
bride and new mother. At that
time, the meetings were held in
the Manning Community Hall,
which has since burned down.
In 1948, the program was an
all-day meeting with a formal
luncheon incorporating the
ideals of good nutrition.
Changes made over the years
have included scheduling
meetings in the evenings, as
more women entered the work
force, and the luncheon has
