Lady Loggers im provem ent shows with 7-3 record in league play
The Vernonia High School
girts varsity basketball team
pleased the home town fans,
defeating Portland Adventist,
52-48, Monday night.
Senior Alexis Posley was
high scorer with 18 points.
“ I feel that we played a good
game and everyone had a part
in our victory," said senior
Kirsten Hyde.
There was some foul trouble
early in the game, but the play
ers didn’t let it stop them.
“W e stayed positive and
played to our level," Hobart
said. “The bench was a huge
part of our game as well. They
have improved and stepped up
to help our team."
The Lady Loggers also won
at Oregon Episcopal School,
Jan. 28, 53-32.
“T he girls played a very
good game. The intensity and
focus were outstanding,” said
head coach Vince Baker.
Hobart led with 15 points,
while senior Bridget Titus fol
lowed with 12. Hyde had a
good game as well, with nine
rebounds and seven blocked
shots.
“W e were able to hold down
our turnovers to 14 or 15 total,
w hich is great for us,” Baker
said.
Citv
City Christian has had a 38
game winning streak this sea-
son, and the Lady Loggers
were unable to break it on Jan.
25. Instead, the Lady Loggers
left City Christian with a 26-84
loss.
Hyde brought nine points to
the game, and senior Alexis
Posley contributed five.
“ I appreciate the girls’ focus
during the entire game,” said
Baker. “City Christian was re
lentless with their press, and
the girls battled all the way.”
The Vernonia High School
boys varsity basketball team
has improved this season, Re
cording to head coach Scott
Finlay.
The Loggers lost a close
gam e to O regon Episcopal
School, Jan. 28, 60-62.
“This gam e was a big
ouch,” said Finlay. “ It was a
fiercely contested and very ex
citing game, especially at the
end.”
The Loggers found them
selves down by nine with a
minute to go in the fourth quar
ter. “ ...dow n by nine, Kelly Bas-
ka hit two three-point shots,
and we fou led them three
times, where they got another

The team ’s league record is

good teams in the preseason.

tributed 10 points. W eller had
made an am azing steal under
the basket, but couldn’t get the
shot,” Finlay related with en
thusiasm.
W ith .0:68 seconds in the
fourth, OES was again fouled,
and they missed both shots.
The Loggers rebounded and
were able to get the ball to
sophom ore Kyle Cota who at
tem pted a three point shot at
the buzzer. Unfortunately, the
ball bounced off the rim.
“We made a terrific com e
back in this game, and had
plenty of good opportunities to
win near the end, making the
game very exciting," said Fin
lay. Baska led the team in
points, w ith 19, and senior
Travis Hightower was right on
his heels with 15 points.
bounds, w hile sen ior Jason
Busch contributed eight points
and nine rebounds as well.
In spite of hard play, the
Loggers’ effort w asn’t enough
on Jan. 25, as they left City
Christian with a 49-56 loss.
“The first and third quarters
were excellent. W e played very
well during those tim es," Finlay
said. “Unfortunately, we had to
play the second and fourth
quarters as well." Finlay attrib
utes the rough tim e to an ex
cessive num ber of turnovers
and City C hristian’s shooting
ability.

sixteen points and added eight
rebounds, while Dinger and Ba-
enough this season to have
more successes than the re
cord show s,” said Finlay.
“W e’ve had problems this sea
son, but, w e’re a better team
than we were in December."
Facing Portland Lutheran on
Jan. 21, the team was defeated
55-66.
Leading scorers were Baska
and Busch, each with twelve
points, and Hightower with 10
points and 10 rebounds.
Against the top-ten ranked
Corbett Cardinals on Jan. 18,
the Loggers played a very
tough game. But once again,
their toughness just didn’t cut
it, and they were defeated, 52-
84.
