BETTY JANE O’LEARY
Betty Jane O’Leary, 76, Vancouver,
Wash., died Jan. 3, 2009. A funeral
Mass was held at Our Lady of Lourdes
Catholic Church in Vancouver, Wash.
Interment was at Willamette National
Cemetery.
Mrs. O’Leary was born April 26,
1923, in Vernonia. Her maiden name
was Johnston. She was a homemak­
er and a clerk at Safeway for many
years.
Her first husband, Jewel Mattox,
died in 1953. Also in 1953, she married
Clement O’Leary; he died in 1998.
Survivors include her daughters,
Launie of Battle Ground, Wash, and
Dolores Frye of Vancouver, Wash; son,
Timothy J. of Vancouver; sisters, Bev­
erly Irvin of Gresham, Joy Hayes of
Scio and Judy Camberg of Astoria;
brothers, William H. Johnston of Fla.,
Duane Johnston of Florida, and Jack
Johnston of Tillamook; six grandchil­
dren and three great-grandchildren.
Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home in
Vancouver was in charge of the
arrangements.
JAMES E. HARRIS
James Elwood Harris, 70, Astoria,
died Jan. 1, 2000. Services were held
at Skyline Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Harris was born Sept. 16, 1929,
1970s as a pricer in the book depart­
ment.
She married William L. Rogers in
1948. Her husband died in February,
1999.
Survivors include her sisters, Ann
Keesee of Citrus Heights, Calif., and
Ellen Meyer of Vernonia; numerous
nieces and nephews including her
caregivers Sue and Mike Maxon.
Remembrances are suggested to a
charity of choice.

Chapel of Portland was in charge of
arrangements.
in Minneapolis, Minn., to Louis Zebby
and Mildred (Sorsoeil) Harris. The fam­
ily moved to Scoggins Valley in 1934.
He graduated from Hillsboro High
School in 1949.
He was sent to Korea in 1951, was
injured and received a Purple Heart.
He was discharged in 1956.
Also in 1951, he married Donna
Lois Hart. They divorced in 1985.
Mr. Harris was self-employed for
many years, with Texaco and Enco. He
retired in 1988 after 17 years with the
Beaverton School District.
Survivors include a brother, Jack
Harris of Cornelius; two sons, Craig
and Andrew, both of Aloha; three
daughters, Patti Boyd and Deena
Stokesbury, both of Aloha, and Heidi
Swickard of Wilsonville; a brother, Jack
of Cornelius, his companion of 15
years, Esther Rogers of Banks; nine
grandchildren; three great-grandchil­
dren.

ALVEN “WAYNE’’ BRADEN
Alven “Wayne" Braden, 51, Canby,
died Jan. 11,2000, of cancer. A memo­
rial service was held Jan. 15 at the
Canby Adult Center. Disposition was
by cremation.
Mr. Braden was born May 11, 1948
in Wagoner County, Okla. He served in
the U.S. Army in Vietnam and Turkey.
He moved to Portland in the early
1960s and to Canby in 1972. Also in
1972, he married Sharon Lang.
Mr. Braden was a heavy-construc­
tion worker out of Local 320. He be­
came field representative for the union
in 1989. He had also been secre-
tary/treasurer for the District Council of
Laborers.
Survivors include his wife; son, An­
drew of Canby; daughter, Nicki Salis­
bury of Canby; brothers, Charles and
Jim, both of Yamhill, Jack of Portland
and Al of Milwaukie; sisters, Ruby
Webb of Banks and Gale Braden and
Shirley DeBiose both of Portland.
Remembrances are suggested to
Providence Medical Foundation for on­
cology nursing.
Arrangements were by Canby Fu­
neral Chapel.
ELSIE E. ROGERS
Elsie Elizabeth Rogers, 85, Port­
land, died Jan. 9, 2000, at a Portland
care center. At her request, no service
was held. Interment was at Willamette
National Cemetery.
Mrs. Rogers was born Sept. 13,
1914 in Springfield to Duncan Bruce
and Hazel (Utiger) McDonald. She was
raised in Vernonia; graduated from
Vernonia High School and moved to
Portland soon after.
She was one of the first female me­
ter readers for Portland General Elec­
tric during World War II. She then
worked at the downtown store of J.K.
Gill Company until retiring in the late
MARIE B. RUFENER
Marie Barbara Rufener, 92, Banks,
died Jan. 2, 2000. A memorial service
will abe held Saturday, Jan. 22, at 3:00
p.m. in Banks Community United
Methodist Church. Disposition was by
cremation.
Mrs. Rufener was bom April 2,
1907 in West Union. Her maiden name
was Zurcher. She graduated from
Washington High School.
In 1930, she married William H.
Rufener. He died in 1995.
Mrs. Rufener was a homemaker
and also farmed in the Banks area
from 1937 until 1992.
She was a member of Banks Com­
munity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughters,
Betty A. Jabusch of Newcastle, Calif,
and Janet L. Presley of Los Altos,
Calif.; son, William H. Jr. of Banks; nine
grandchildren and 14 great-grandchil­
dren.
Remembrances are suggested to
Habitat for Humanity International, 121
Habitat St., Americus, GA 31709; or to
a favorite charity.
DIANE E. LITTLEPAGE
Diane E. Littlepage, 50, Jewell, died
January 8, 2000. Memorial services
were held Jan. 13 at Nehalem Valley
Community Church in Jewell.
Mrs. Littlepage was born August 10,
1949 in Hillsboro. Her maiden name
was Colby. She graduated from Gas­
ton High School in 1968. She lived in
the Hillsboro area most of her life be­
fore moving to Jewell in 1991.
Mrs. Littlepage worked for the Hills­
boro School District for 18 years, 11 of
them at McKinney Elementary School.
Survivors include her fiancé, James
Hoby, Jewell; two daughters, Tina

Clark of Portland and Jenny Clark of
Beaverton; a son, Jesse of Jewell; two
sisters, Sharon Gregson and Debra
Lott, two granddaughters, four nieces,
a nephew and many great-nieces and
great-nephews.
BARBARA J. KNUDSEN
Barbara June Long Bagley Knud­
sen, 68, Salt Lake City, Utah, died Jan­
uary 1, 2000, in Salt Lake City of com­
plications of amyloidosis. Funeral ser­
vices were held Jan. 4 at Mt. Olympus
Seventh Ward of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake
City.
She was born June 18, 1931, in
Provo, Utah, the tenth of 13 children of
George and Ida (Robinson) Long. She
was raised in the Tophill area and at­
tended Scofield Grade School and
Banks High School.
In 1948, she married Max Bagley in
1948; he died in 1986. She married Jay
D. Knudsen in 1991 in Salt Lake City.
Mrs. Knudsen was a lifelong mem­
ber of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints and had served in
numerous positions in the church.
Survivors include her husband; two
daughters, Lana Bagley Davis and Di­
anne Hook-Willis; four step-daughters,
two sisters, Alice and Esther; seven
brothers: Hobart, Lawrence, Edward,
John, Hyrum, Joseph and Huey Long,
all Oregon residents; 12 grandchildren,
19 step-grandchildren; six great-grand­
children; numerous step-great-grand­
children; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two
daughters, Heidi Bagley and Shirlee
Bagley Crawford; a son, Steven; and
three brothers, Harvey, Oscar and
Charles Long.
Remembrances are suggested to
the LDS Church Missionary Fund.
