DARRELL LEX HOLLIS
Darrell Lex Hollis, 40, died Dec. 13,
1999 in Tennessee. A funeral was held
in Hohenwald, Tenn; disposition was
by cremation.
Mr. Hollis was bom Aug. 2, 1959, in
Hillsboro. He graduated from Banks
High School and was a veteran of the
US Air Force.
He was a self-employed cabinet
maker but had worked for McMinnville
Moving & Storage for about five years
and Stewart Lumber Co.
He married Madelyn Hamilton in
1986. They had lived in Hohenwald
since 1995. He was a member of
Gales Creek Church of God.
Survivors include his wife; sons,
Tony and Matthew, and daughters,
Megan and Marley, all of Hohenwald;
father, Sidney L. “Lex* of Manning;
mother, Ivy Gwynn of Lafayette; broth
er, David of Yamhill; sisters, Dawnita
Jackson of Eugene and Denda Waters
of Independence; and grandmother,
Inez Scrivner of Hillsboro.

John Michael Emmons, 81, Lake-
wood, Wash., died Nov. 21, 1999, at

Mr. Emmons was bom May 17,
1918, in Vernonia to James and Jesse
Babe Mabel (Rose) Emmons. His
grandparents, Michael E. and Margaret
(Stewart) Emmons, came to Oregon
from Illinois and . homesteaded on
Stoney Point Road in 1887. His father
was six years old at the time. His moth
er's parents, Spencer Bartell Rose and
Alice Anna (Freel) Rose, were also ear
ly Vernonia pioneers.
He retired from the U.S. Army in
1962 and from a Civil Service career at
Madigan Army Medical Center in 1986.
He was a beekeeper known by many
as the “honey man.” He was a member
of the V.F.W. and the D.A.V.
Survivors include his wife of 51
years, Use; sons Klaus and Michael;
daughter Cynthia; seven grandchil
dren; three great-grandchildren and
one brother, Donald E. of Portland.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, Harry, and a sister, Thelma M.
Jones.

GEORGE E.A. SALMI
George Elmer Abraham Salmi, 85,
Clatskanie, died Dec. 15, 1999, at his
home. Services were held Dec. 18 at
Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary Chapel in
Clatskanie. Interment was at Murray
Hill Cemetery. Masonic rites were un
der the auspices of Clatskanie Lodge
No. 133, AF&AM.
Mr. Salmi was born July 21, 1914,
in Quincy to Matti and Maria (Koskela)
Salmi. He attended Mist School and

He retired from Beaver Lumber Com
pany.
In 1941 he married Annie M. Mc
Mullen in Cathlamet, Wash. They lived
on a farm in Marshland for 34 years.
He was a member of the Clatskanie
Masonic Lodge and Clatskanie Senior
Citizens. The Salmis bought and re
stored the home built by Thomas Flip
pin in 1898. They opened it for public
tours and made it available for pur
chase by the Clatskanie Senior Citi
zens, even backing the loan so it could
become a center for senior activities.
Survivors include a daughter,
Georgeann Shultz, Clatskanie; a sister,
Maria Murphy, Portland; three grand
children and one great grandchild.
