KATHERINE M. “GRANNY” JOHNS Katherine Marie Johns, 90, former­ ly of Vernonia, died August 12,1999, at the Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Forest Grove. A memorial service was held Aug. 17 at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Vernonia, with Pastor Michael E. Jackson, of the Vernonia Assembly of God Church, officiating. Inurnment was at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, with Lodge rites under the auspices of Forest Chapter No. 42, O.E.S. Mrs. Johns was born Dec. 7, 1908, in Carson, Louisiana, to Thomas and Mary (Daniels) Fulton. She moved with her mother and brothers to Vernonia in the mid-1920s. She met George Johns in a logging camp and they were married in 1926, in Vancouver, Wash. They made their home in Vernonia. At the beginning of World War II, she was working at the Oregon-Ameri­ can Mill, then both she and her hus­ band went to work in the shipyards in Portland, building landing craft. They moved to Pendleton in 1954 and worked as custodians for the school district. In 1973, they returned to Vernonia, where they made their home on the banks of the Nehalem River. The home and everything in it, was lost in the great flood of 1996, so she moved to her granddaughter's home in Aloha. After becoming ill in 1997, she moved to the Masonic and Eastern Star Home in Forest Grove. Mrs. Johns was lifetime member of Forest Chapter OES, formerly Ne­ halem Chapter in Vernonia, was a Mother Advisor to the local Rainbow Chapter. She was also active in the Vernonia Senior Citizens Center. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, and three brothers, Robert and Thomas Fulton, and Jack Graney. Survivors include a son, James T. of Vernonia; daughter, Mary Ann Cline of Forest Grove; grandchildren Carol Davis of Vernonia, Tim Johns of Hills­ boro and Susan Lorentzen of Aloha; six great-grandchildren; one great- great-granddaughter; six nieces and nephews. Remembrances are suggested to the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery Beautification Fund, 919 Bridge St., Vernonia, or to the Vernonia Senior Center, 446 Bridge St., Vernonia. Fuiten-Rose & Hoyt was in charge of arrangements. PEGGY L. GRISMORE Peggy Lee Grismore, Hillsboro, 33, died July 28, 1999, in Sutter General Hospital, Sacramento, Calif. Services were held August 2 at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove, with the Rev. Eugene Sabin, of the First Christian Church, officiating. Mrs. Grismore was born Jan. 23, 1966, in St. Helens, to David and Peg­ gy Jean (Weaver) Gamroth. She at­ tended Banks High School. She worked as a tax consultant for Business Services. She married George Grismore Jr; they were later divorced. At the time of her death, she was making marriage plans with Isodoro Bernabe-Andreade of Hillsboro. She was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her mother; five sons, Jason Grismore and Joel Bern- abe, both of Hillsboro, George Gris­ more, Jr., of Forest Grove, and Christo­ pher Grismore and Javier Bernabe, both of Rainier; a brother, David Gam­ roth of Forest Grove; two sisters, Melissa Compton of Rainier and LeeAnn Cutright of St. Helens. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home of Forest Grove was in charge of the arrangements. LEWIS E. “RUSTY” WHITE Lewis Everett “Rusty" White, 66, Salome, Ariz., died August 13, 1999, in Hillsboro. Private family services were held. Mr. White was born September 8, 1932 in Gaston, to Lewis E. and Nora (Frasieur) White. He was raised and educated in the Forest Grove and Yamhill/Carlton areas. At the age of 17, he joined the U S. Marine Corp, and was honorably dis­ charged in 1961. In 1966 he re-enlist­ ed for two more years. While in the ser­ vice, he was trained as an engineer and heavy equipment operator. When he was discharged in 1961, Mr. White worked for a plumbing wholesale company in the Portland area. In 1969, he worked for Delta Trucking as a truck driver, retiring after 12 years. From 1981 to 1989, he was employed as a crane operator at Camp Pendelton, Calif., until his forced retire­ ment due to medical reasons. Westside Cremation Service was in charge of the arrangements. GLENN B. SIKES Glenn B. Sikes, 83, died August 7, 1999. Graveside services were held Aug. 10 in Skyline Memorial Gardens. Mr. Sikes was born May 16, 1916, in Filer, Idaho. He married Bonnie Johnson in 1936 Mr. Sikes served in th U.S. Army during World War II. He lived in the Portland area from 1964 until the time of his death. He was a mechanic and welder, and worked for the City of Portland for ten years before retiring in the late 1970s. Mr. Sikes was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Afu. Survivors include his wife; son Dewey of Vancouver, Wash.; daugh­ ters, Louise Dodge of Wilsonville, Dor- la Carey of Michigan, and Faye Hath- horn of Banks; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
