Obituary
PHOEBE GREENMAN BURROW
Phoebe Greenman Burrow, 86,
Manzanita, died July 7, 1999. Services
were held Friday, July 16, at St. Mark’s
Anglican Church.
Mrs. Burrow was born Oct. 14,
1912, in Union Mill, Wash. Her maiden
name was Greenman. Her family
moved to Vernonia when she was 12,
and later graduated from St. Helens
Hall and the University of Oregon.
She married Charles Burrow in
1936. Mrs. Burrow was a secretary for
a health insurance company before her
retirement, and also a member of St.
Mark's Anglican Church.
She lived in Portland from 1942
through 1955, then in Boston before
returning to Portland in 1961. In 1995,
Mrs. Burrows moved to Manzanita.
Survivors include her husband;
sons, Judd of Manzanita and Robert of
Portland; four grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
St. Mark’s Anglican Church.
Riverview Abbey Funeral Home in
Manzanita was in charge of the
arrangements.
GLEN P. IRELAND
Glen Paul Ireland, 82, Forest
Grove, died July 6, 1999, at the Regal
Villa Care Center. A funeral service
was held July 14, at Fuiten, Rose &
Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove.
Interment will be in Forest View Ceme
tery in Forest Grove.
Mr. Ireland was born Feb. 2, 1917,
to Arthur and Ada Snook Ireland, in
Forest Grove.
During World War II, he served in
the U.S. Army. Later, he attended Ore
gon State College.
In 1938, he married Lillian McBeth,
and they made their home on the fam
ily farm until 1942 when they moved to
Beaverton.
Mr. Ireland operated Dairyfolks Hol
stein Farm in Forest Grove until 1970,
when he retired. After retiring from the
farm, he worked as a welder for Ore
gon Steel in Portland until 1981.
Mr. Ireland was a member of Banks
Community Church and a 4-H Club
leader for more than 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his
son, Robert.
Survivors include his wife, daugh
ters, Marilyn Peters of Forest Grove,
and Joan Stirling of Boise, Idaho; son,
John of Forest Grove, 10 grandchildren
and 11 great-grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to

KENNETH L. WILLIAMS, JR.
Kenneth Luck Williams, Jr., 81,
Hillsboro, died July 13, 1999, at Tuality
Community Hospital in Hillsboro. Ser
vices were held July 17 at Vernonia
Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev.
Robert Grafe officiating. Full military
honors were presented by military per
sonnel with the 'Department of the
Army, Ft. Lewis, Wash.
Mr. Williams was born April 15,
1918, in Santa Barbara, Calif., to Ken
neth L. and Gertrude (Mayer) Williams.
He was raised and educated in south
ern California.
Mr. Williams joined the U.S. Army in
1937. He served in World War II and
the Korean Conflict, as well as working
at the Pentagon during his twenty
years of service. He retired in 1957
with a rank of Lt. Colonel.
After retiring from the armed forces,
Mr. Williams returned to school, receiv
ing his B.A. and M.S. from Long Beach
State. After earning his degrees, he
started his second career as an ele
mentary principal in Buena Park, Calif.,
until retiring from education twenty-two
years later.
Mr. Williams married Sharon
Magoff Dorton in 1987 in Huntington
Beach, Calif. They made their home in
southern California until 1989, when
they moved to Vernonia. Mr. Williams
was a reserve officer with the Vernonia
Police Department for several years
before returning to Southern California.
They moved to Hillsboro just two years
after returning to Southern California.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death
by his brother, Wilbur, and sister Murial
Marble.
Survivors include his wife; sons,
Kenneth, of Orange, Calif., John of
Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and
Benjamin of Garden Grove, Calif.; a
daughter, Kathleen Cangiano of Gar
den Grove; two step-sons, Bob J. Dor-
ton of Pomona, Calif., and Stephen L.
Dorton of Avondale, Ariz.; a sister,
Louise Witting of Yucca Valley, Calif.,
four grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.

GAIL STEELE
Gail Steele, 75, Clatskanie, died
July 12, 1999, at St. John Medical
Center in Longview. Services were
held July 16, at Haakinson-Groulx Mor
tuary in Clatskanie.
Mr. Steele was born November 13,
1923, in Clatskanie, to William Arthur
and Malvina Lewis Steele. He was
raised and educated in Clatskanie. Af
ter graduating from Clatskanie High
School in 1941, Mr. Steele attended
Linfield College until he was called into
active duty with the U.S. Army Air
Corps in March of 1943. He was sta
tioned in Italy for the remainder of
World War II.
Following his discharge from the
service, he returned to Linfield, where
he met Alvista Ray. They were married
in Clatskanie in 1946.
Mr. Steele was a member of Ameri
can Legion Louis Larsen Post #68 for
over 50 years, and was also a member
of the Legion’s honorary organization,
the 40 et 8. Mr. Steele was also recog
nized by the Clatskanie Kiwanis Club
as a George F. Hixon Fellow.
Survivors include his wife; daugh
ters Dayle Christensen of Corvallis and
Deborah Hazen of Clatskanie; five
grandchildren, Andrew Christensen of
Salem, Jennifer Sparks of Corvallis,
Amanda Moravec of Milwaukie, Erika
Wehrley of Portland and Adam
Wehrley of Auke Bay and Glennallen,
Alaska.

JOHN C. FRANTZ
John Clayton Frantz, 78, Vernonia,
died July 15, 1999, at his home. Pri
vate cremation rites were held. At his
request, no public service will be held.
Mr. Frantz was born August 2, 1920
in Dawson, West Virginia, to Noah and
Elfie (Shawver) Frantz. He was raised
and educated in West Virginia.
He served in the Civilian Conserva
tion Corps at the Craters of The Moon
in Arco, Idaho, and later worked in a
lumber mill and in coal mines.
Mr. Frantz joined the U.S. Army in
1942. He served in the 117th Chemical
Service Company and was discharged
in 1945.
He moved west in 1947, working in
construction, and moved to Oregon in
1948. He worked for Mike Thoen Con
struction Company in Hillsboro until re
tiring in 1964.
Mr. Frantz married Ida “Sandy”
White in 1960 in Stevenson, Wash.
They lived in Forest Grove until 1987,
when they moved to Vernonia.
He played violin, guitar and man
dolin and was a member of the com
munity Rutabaga band.
Survivors include his wife; four chil
dren, Ronald of Hillsboro, Barbara
Spence of Ashwood, Robert of Hills
boro and Virginia of Newport; two
stepchildren; two brothers, Jason of
Waynesville, Ohio, and Harold of West
Virginia; two sisters, Claire Osborn of
West Virginia and Evelyn Roberts of
Hillsboro; 14 grandchildren; 12 great
grandchildren and numerous nieces
and nephews.

Hillsboro was in charge of arrange
ments.
RALPH W. PIEREN
Ralph William Pieren, 89, died July
16,1999,. Funeral Service was July 20
in Waud’s Funeral Home in Tillamook.
Interment was in Blaine Community
Cemetery.
Mr. Pieren was born July 1,1910, in
Orenco. He was raised in North Plains
and lived in Alaska before moving to
Beaver in 1949.
He served in the U.S. Army during
World War II. He was a logger for many
years before retiring. In 1952, he mar
ried Dorothy Browning.
Survivors include his wife; sons,
Douglas of Seldovia, Alaska, Rodney
of Hereford, Ariz., and Steven, Timothy
and Oliver, all of Beaver; daughter,
Marie of Oak Grove; sisters, Helen
Cook of Helvetia and Fern Congdon of
Vernonia; five grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Remembrances are suggested to
Tillamook County Hospice.
JAMES L. HOUGH
James L. Hough died July 16,
1999. Funeral services were held July
20 in Cornwell Colonial Chapel in
Wilsonville. Interment was in Belle
Passi Cemetery in Woodburn.
Mr. Hough was born Jan. 28, 1925,
in Los Angeles. He served in the Cana
dian Army during World War II. He lived
for more than 20 years in southern Cal
ifornia.
He married Edith Courtney in 1949.
Mr. Hough was a machinist for Dou
glas Aircraft. He later was a planner for
the Apollo space program for Rocket-
dyne, then became a manufacturing
engineer for Weston Hydraulics.
After moving to the Sherwood area
in 1971, he owned Hough Machine
Works and a blueberry farm in Sher
wood.
Survivors include his wife; daugh
ter, Leslie of Seattle; sons, Brian of La
guna Beach, Calif., and David o,
Banks; half-sister, Laura Connibear of
Elora, Ontario; three grandchildren.
