drive at 47J ofc.
A Red Cross blood drive will
be held at the Vernonia School
District office, 299 Bridge
Street, on Wednesday, Oct. 28,
from 1:30 - 7:00 p.m.
Anyone aged 17 or older,
who weighs at least 105
pounds and is in good general
health, can schedule a dona
tion appointment by calling the
district office at 429-3521.
Vernonia students and com
munity members are coordinat
ing the blood drive to help en
sure an ample blood supply for
regional hospital patients need
ing transfusions of whole blood
or blood components. Students
play a critical role in maintain
ing an adequate blood supply
because they comprise nearly
10 percent of this region’s
donor base.
Only five percent of the pop
ulation donates, yet one out of
three people will use blood
products in their lifetime. Main
taining an adequate blood sup
ply requires regular donations
by volunteer blood donors.
School blood drives offer most
people their first opportunity to
start a lifesaving habit.

Volunteer, Board Secretary
Personnel news: Welcome to Nellie Gregg, our new “Green
Thumb” employee. Vernonia Cares and the Senior Center are
sharing Nellie’s services; she will work at the food bank on
Thursdays.
Vernonia Cares has accepted the resignation of our President,
Vicky Rice. Vicky has accepted a new position at U.S. Bank, tak
ing her out of the community every day, so she’s had to resign
some of her community duties. Bad news for the Board of
Directors, but the good news is that she and her family will
remain Vernonia citizens.
New officers of the Board of Directors are: President Bill Yeo,
Vice-president Laurie Jerman, Secretary Audeen Wagner, and
Treasurer Suzanne Palleck. Lots of plans for the future at
Vernonia Cares, stay tuned!!
Activities: The Community Food Drive will kick off on November
14; door-to-door pickup wil be November 21. Lisa Edgar and her
committee are working very hard to make this a huge success,
and all are hoping for community volunteers to organize neigh
borhoods as they have in the past.
The United Way Campaign is underway, and the Vernonia
Cares board and volunteers are working toward a large commu
nity donation, both from businesses and citizens. Most of the dol
lars that keeps us going come from this important source...well
over $7,000 last year. Your help is greatly appreciated.
The Kid’s Corner Store, that has been so popular in the past, will
be a December activity. Previously held at school, Kid s Comer is
a “store” where kids (and their parents) can shop for gift items
and toys (priced from $.50 to $10!). It’s a great place for children
to do a little Christmas shopping inexpensively, and the proceeds
will benefit the food bank, which is especially meaningful at this
time of year. Watch for details and publicity about this between
now and Christmas.
Recent Donations: Thanks to the Holce Family for the Rick
Holce Memorial Fund for the Food Bank. It was greatly appreci
ated.
Thanks to the Bob Ragsdale family for their donation of over
200 pounds of pantry/freezer items. This was also a memorial
9'f The Vernonia Hands-On Art Center has donated half a beef for
our freezer, which will be greatly appreciated by our families.
(This was originally donated by Dr. Thiringer to the Art Center
and, since the center is “on hold” for now, they have donated the
meat to Vernonia Cares. Thank, you, Hands-On Art Center and
Dr. Thiringer.)
Also, Rod and Sharon Luckasson recently moved away from
Vernonia, and donated a large quantity of frozen and canned
food to the food bank. Vernonia Cares thanks them for this gen
