Will support
Bond measure
Jail
To the Editor:
I will be supporting the levy
for the new jail in Coumbia
County. The jail will be used by
the Sheriffs Dept., all city police
depts., Oregon State police of
ficers, and occasionally, federal
law enforcement officers. The
new jail would cost $38.00 per
year for a home assessed at
$100,00.00.
The present jail is not capa
ble of holding those criminals
that need to be held. According
to The Spotlight, the jail was
designed to hold 33 male pris
oners and six female prisoners.
During the period beginning
Sept. 27 and ending Oct. 3, the
daily average population in the
jail was 42 male prisoners and
seven female prisoners. The
present jail is obviously not
large enough and the Sheriff’s
Office has been forced to re
lease criminals such as bur
glars, sex offenders, and drug
dealers due to overcrowding.
Columbia County is also rent
ing jail space from Yamhill
County costing taxpayers thou
sands of dollars. With a new
jail, this won’t happen. As the
county continues to grow, the
problem will only intensify un
less the levy is passed.
Join me and vote yes for a
new jail!

Doubts expressed
about DeShazer
To the Editor:
In the primaries I was ap
palled when I heard Colleen
DeShazer make the comment
she wanted the roads wider so
children could play in the
streets. Well now she has out
done herself.
At the Candidates Fair (in
St. Helens, Oct. 1) she was
asked what she thought about
people using drugs and why
there were rumors of her using
drugs. Her first comment was
she knew this would come up
sooner or later. Then she said
she’s not responsible for what
her family does. I took this to
mean that her family may use
drugs. She continued, saying
that she had no problem with
drugs as long as they weren’t
around the schools and sold to
our children. First of all, I still
believe using drugs is illegal in
our society, so what makes it
right in her mind that it’s OK?
Drugs are a devastating dis
ease in our society and we
have to continue fighting the
battle against drugs.
Is this the type of person we
want as a County Commission
er?

Protect community,
vote Yes on jail bond
To the Editor:
In the first six months of
1998, over 300 convicted or ar
rested people were released
who should have been in jail.
There was no room.
We need to protect our
selves and our community.
The present jail is 30 years
old and has 33 beds for male
inmates and six beds for fe
males. Columbia County has to
rent beds from Yamhill County.
The cost for the proposed
jail is $38 per year for a
$100,000 house. This new jail
will help to protect our county.
We need you to get out and
vote. We need your vote for a
new jail.

Taylor informed, hard
worker for district
To the Editor:
I didn’t know (Oregon Rep.)
Jackie Taylor the first time I vot
ed for her: my vote was based
on the good things people said
about her. Since that time, I’ve
gotten to know Jackie, and she
still gets my vote. She’s in
formed, honest, and works
very hard for the people she
represents. She takes her job
seriously and has earned the
respect of all who know and
work with her — even her op
ponents.
Because of term limits, this
will be Jackie’s last term in of
fice. With a strong vote from
us, I think Jackie can be an
even more effective voice for
us in Salem. I urge you to vote
for Jackie Taylor for 1 st District
Representative.
Sincerely,
Diana Boom

To the Editor:
I attended a WGS Jr. High
home football game the other
night. We didn’t win, but the
kids played very well and I was
proud of all of them. I wish I
could say the same thing for
the “fans.”
Other kids were throwing
and kicking a football on the
sidelines, others were running
up and down the bleachers,
parents talked loudly about
everything but the football
game.
These students and their
coaches have worked very
hard to prepare for these
games. They deserve the re
spect and attention of the peo
ple that are supposedly there
to see them.
Kids, if you want to throw a
football around, go over to the
grade school field and throw it.
High school team, when your
practice is over, go clean up
and come sit in the stands.
Don’t sit on the sidelines. No
one should be on the sidelines
that is not a member of the
team.
