were recognized nationally for
excellence in forestry.
These two family tree farms
have in common a com m it
ment to uneven aged timber
management. They are prov
ing that there are viable alter
natives to the clearcut, plant,
and poison orthodoxy of indus
trial forestry.
Uneven aged management
means selective harvesting.
Trees of different ages and
species remain after logging.
O penings crea ted are only
large enough to assure vigor
ous na tura l re g e n e ra tio n .
Maintaining a high percentage
of vegetative cover protects
both soils and water quality.

ture levels are more constant
the eco-system is under less
stress and forest health prob
lems are minimized. Both trees
and wildlife thrive under this
regime.
In c o n tra s t, in d u s tria l
forestry is extreme forestry.
The tim ber com panies’ own
excess has generated an ex
treme reaction in the form of
Ballot Measure 64. Measure
64 would also put an end to
the innovative forestry being
pioneered by the Lairds and
V anN attas. M oderates can
support neither current indus
trial forest practices nor those
that would be imposed by 64.
Why should we have to
choose betw een these two
e v ils ? D e fo re s ta tio n , w ith
flooding, mudslides, fouled wa
ter, and endangered species,
versus almost no timber har
vesting at all. The Lairds and
VanNattas represent a work
able start at compromise.
W hich do you b e lie ve is
more sustainable? The historic
boom and bust cycle of indus
trial logging with lots of jobs for
a short period of time, or fewer
jobs forever?
Our anger is legitimate. We
have the right to legislate our
own survival. We can do better
than Measure 64, but we must
govern the timber industry or
they will govern us.
