are currently using,” said Dee
Wooley, president of the dis
trict’s board of directors. “So,
we decided to turn this disad
vantage into a benefit for the
residents of Columbia County.”
By contacting other districts
that recently underw ent up
grades and purchasing their
used equipment, which would
otherwise have been discard
ed, the 911 district saved a sig
nificant amount of money.
An internal electronics up
grade that would have needed
$65,000 from the district’s al
ready tight budget, was done
for approxim ately $6000. Con
sequently, the next upgrade, a
projected $90,000 expense,
will be only about half that
amount.
“W hile we are proud of the
staff’s unique approach,” said
W ooley, “the nature of the
equipment now used by other
911 districts makes it im possi
ble for us to seek the same
kind of solution in the future.”
W ith com puter technology
constantly expanding into the
delivery of 911 services, equip
ment from other districts would
no longer be com patible with
C olum bia’s out-dated system.
W ooley likens the situation to
using a personal com pute r
bought in 1994 and trying to
connect it to equipm ent made
in 1998.
“The te ch n o lo g y is light
years apart. Basically, we have

done all that we can with what
we have at this point,” W ooley
added. “W e definitely need to
find another answ er to our 911
needs if we are to keep pace
with the needs of Colum bia
County.”
