Business notes
workshop leads
to help for local
business owners
Business owners interested
in taking advantage of work
shops in Vernonia for small and
emerging businesses, and/or
one-on-one business counsel
ing will soon be able to do so.
At a June 19 meeting, local
business owners met with
members of the Oregon Rural
Development Council to exam
ine the needs of businesses in
the area. As a result of discus
sion, small business work
shops and one-on-one busi
ness counseling were offered
by the Small Business Devel
opment Center of Portland
Community College and the
Small Business Assistance
program of Portland State Uni
versity.
Vernonia Community Devel
opment Corporation (VCDC)
will act as local coordinator for
the programs by gathering the
names of interested individu
als. Local business owners
who wish to be included are
asked to call either Jim Tierney
at 429-0720, or Julius Dalzell
at 429-4037, with areas of in
terest and the best times to
meet.
Access to financing was
also discussed at the meeting,
for both new and on-going
businesses. Arrangements will
be made, through VCDC, to
work individually with the busi
nesses to meet their financial
needs.
An anniversary celebration with lots of celebrants
W hen G ordon Sm ith and C huck H endryx, ow ners of
Vernonia Sentry Market, reached their 25th year of serving
the community, they decided to celebrate by giving away
lots of groceries. Pictured above are some of the winners in
the big 25th Anniversary Giveaway. Winning a year’s supply
of various items — ranging from orange juice to bath tissue
to ice cream — were Dawn Naeve, Lynn O’Dair, KC Cradit,

“My kids had seen ice cream
trucks when they’d visited oth
er places,” Larry Bays said
when asked why he decided to
start Dixie Sweets, an ice
cream truck business, “and
they wanted to know why there
wasn’t one in Vernonia. So I
checked it out and started it.”
Now, whenever the temper
ature is over 70 degrees, Bays
and his little sign-covered truck
will drive throughout town,
alerting ice cream lovers with
tinkling melodies. When the
temperature falls under 70 de
grees, he will be out only on
Fridays and Saturdays. In addi-
tion to local neighborhoods,
Vernonia Lake and Anderson
Park, Bays’ route also includes
Big Eddy Park on Fridays, Sat
urdays and Sundays.
Bays, who is a single father,
knows how every dime counts
in a family, so $1.00 is the
highest price for any of the
treats he carries, and popsicles
are only 25-cents. He also pro
vides sugar-free and fat-free
treats for health conscious
folks.
