Page 14 The INDEPENDENT, December 3, 1997 Scout Cabin group ready to start Holiday safety is important Vernonia’s dream for a the courtyard, locating re community building will be coming true. The Scout Cabin building project is getting un derway to develop a place for Vernonia’s youth to hold meet ings and enjoy social events. It will also be a place for adults to have classes, meet ings, and receptions when the building is not in use for youth programs. The City of Vernonia donat ed the old building in Hawkins Park-long called the Scout Cabin-to a group of citizens who organized as the Friends of the Scout Cabin. The land the cabin sits on has been leased to the Friends group. Now it’s up to the Friends and the community to make the project happen. People of all ages and all in terests are needed for the pro ject to succeed. Help can be offered in many ways including donations of cash, time, labor, equipment or materials; pur chase of a memorial brick for sources, helping with paper work, and much more. Anyone who has volun teered in the past is encour aged to call and volunteer again. The Friends of the Scout Cabin have been work ing on this project for a long time and fear that some volun teers’ names and telephone numbers may have been mis placed. Local contractor Randy Linke gave a minimum bid for the foundation work on the Cabin and will begin work this week. When the foundation is completed, the building will be lowered and given a new roof, then work will begin on the in terior. Dedication is set for June 1, 1998.
