New VHS principal has strong business experience
Vernonia High School’s
new principal, Oregon native
Nancy Elliott, entered the field
of education in a non-tradi-
tional way.
After graduating from the
University of Oregon with a
Bachelor’s degree in Market-
ing/lndustrial Management,
she started out in business,
then married and raised a
family.
When Elliott returned to
the business world, she found
herself increasingly involved
with education, an involve
ment she extended by return
ing to school for a Master of
Science degree in business
education. Then, when she
decided to earn an adminis
trative credential, it was a log
ical extension of her life.
In addition to teaching a
broad spectrum of business
courses, Elliott has devel
oped curriculum, taught over
seas, developed guidelines
for citizen review processes,
analyzed and designed reor
ganization systems for school
offices and records manage
ment, and much more.
Of special interest to the
local area, is her extensive
experience in the School-to-
Work program, where she au
thored a handbook, created
job opportunities for students,

established partnerships with
business, placed high school
students in career-based ex
periences and presented ca
reer awareness programs to
elementary school students.
“Learning is a life-long
process," Elliott said. “It does
n't stop at a certain time in a
person’s life.’’
It’s obvious that she heeds
her own words, too. Part of
her personal education in
cludes foreign language skills
in Spanish, German, French
and Finnish.
Elliott has also been great
ly involved in unpaid commu
nity service, in organizations
as varied as the League of
Women Voters, Stop Oregon
Litter and Vandalism (SOLV),
and Future Business Leaders
of America.
“I’m very enthusiastic,” El
liott said of her position in
Vernonia, “and I look forward
to a positive school year.”
Presently commuting from
southwest Portland, Elliott
and her husband are familiar
with the Vernonia area and
will look for a home here
when things are a little less
hectic.
Elliott’s husband, Dave, is
retired but working as a con
sultant. They have two adult
sons.
