VIRGINIA P. BUTLER
Virginia Pearl Butler, 85, Vernon­
ia, died Aug. 12, 1996. Memorial ser­
vices were held Aug. 15, at St.
John’s Christian Church in Portland.
Disposition was by cremation.
Mrs. Butler was born Nov. 14,
1910, in Ashland. Her maiden name
was Hooper.
She worked at JC Penney in Ash­
land and Portland, also as a welder
in the shipyards during World War II,
She was a baker at Roosevelt High
School for 17 years.
Mrs. Butler was a member of St.
John’s Christian Church for 30 years.
Survivors include her husband,
Walter T. of Vernonia; daughters, Eu­
nice Kretschmer of Vernonia, and
Barbara Bennett of Portland; son, the
Rev. Richard M. of La Pine; eight
grandchildren; nine great-grandchil­
dren and one great-great-grandchild.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Vernonia First Christian Church.

Funeral Directors were in charge of

DONALD J. MALONEY
Donald James Maloney, 65,
Banks, died Aug. 16, 1996, of an ap­
parent heart attack. A funeral Mass
was held Aug. 19 in St. Francis of
Assisi Catholic Church in Roy. Inter­
ment was in St. Francis of Assisi
Cemetery.
Mr. Maloney was born Jan. 5,
1931, in Portland. He graduated from
Columbia Prep School and attended
St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif.,
and the University of Portland.
He served in the U.S. Marines as
an embassy guard in Bangkok, Thai­
land, during the Korean War.
Mr. Maloney was an insurance
adjustor and also worked on the fam­
ily farm.
Survivors include his daughter,
Kathleen of Portland; mother, Ruth of
Banks; brother, Alan of Banks; one
grandchild.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Tri-City Rural Fire Department in
Banks.

were in charge of arrangements.
ERLENE SNELL
Erlene Snell, 79, Portland, died
August 17, 1996, in a Gresham care
facility. Graveside services will be
held August 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Val­
ley Memorial Park in Hillsboro, with
the Rev. C. Eugene Sabin, pastor
em eritus, of the First Christian
Church in Forest Grove, officiating.
Concluding rites and vault interment
will follow.
Mrs. Snell was bom January 18,
1917, in Olney, Texas, to Thomas M.
and Ann Lorena (Henry) Jenkins.
She was raised in Texas until 1929,
when she moved with her sister, Net­
tie, to Vernonia, where she complet­
ed her schooling. She was baptized
in the Vernonia First Christian
Church.
She m arried George Snell in
1943. They made their home in Port­
land. Her husband died in 1951.
Mrs. Snell was also preceded in
death by seven brothers and four sis­
ters.
Survivors include a brother, Clyde
Jenkins of Lubbock, Texas; a sister,
Verna Atkinson of Canon City, Colo.;
numerous nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to
a charity of one's choice.

Grove is in charge of arrangements.
DOROTHY R. THOMPSON
Dorothy R. Thompson, 75, Bux­
ton, died August 19, 1996 at Tuality
Forest Grove Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Fri­
day, Aug. 23, at 1:00 p.m. at Fuiten-
Rose Chapel, 2308 Pacific Avenue,
Forest Grove, with the Rev. Lloyd
Uecker, pastor emeritus of the Forest
Grove United Methodist Church, offi­
ciating. Concluding rites and inter­
ment will follow at Buxton Cemetery.
Viewing (Visitation) Hours are
Wed., Noon to 5:30 p.m.; Thursday,
9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Friday, 9:00
a.m. to Noon, at Fuiten-Rose Chapel
in Forest Grove.
Family and friends are invited to a
reception at the Thompson family
home, 22255 NW Ardabeth Lane,
Banks, immediately following the
cemetery rites.

JOHN W. VIOLETTE
John W. Violette, 49, Beaverton,
died August 5, 1996, at Tuality Com­
munity Hospital in Hillsboro. A wake
will be held Aug. 23 from 6:00 p.m. to
9:00 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge, 8835
SW 30th in Portland. Disposition was
by cremation.
Mr. Violette was born May 10,
1947, in Forest Grove, to the late
Louis E. Violette, Sr. and Vergie
(Reese) Violette. He was raised and
educated in Vernonia. He graduated
from Vernonia High School in 1965.
He worked for the Vernonia Su­
permarket for five years, and contin­
ued as a grocery clerk after moving
to Aloha. In 1974 he moved to
Beaverton, where he worked in the
baking division of Grandma’s Cook­
ies, known today as Frito-Lay, Inc.
He continued there until ill health
forced his recent retirement.
Mr. Violette was a member of the
First Christian Church in Vernonia.
Survivors include his mother, of
Beaverton; brother, Louis E., Jr. of
Tigard; three nephews.

ments.
RICHARD W. FRANCK
Richard W. Franck, 71, Forest
Grove, died Aug. 8, 1996, at his
home after a long illness. Graveside
services were held Aug. 12 in Moun­
tain View Memorial Gardens, with
Rev. Joseph Heuberger of Visitation
Catholic Church in Verboort officiat­
ing. Interment followed.
Mr. Franck was born June 9,
1925, in Forest Grove, to Joseph and
Erma (Duyck) Franck.
He served in the U.S. Army for
one year, 1945-46.
Mr. Franck m arried Juanita
W illiam son in 1946, in Crandall,
Miss.
He was a logger and worked in
many areas of Oregon until retiring in
1978.
Mr. Franck was a member of Visi­
tation Catholic Church, and Elks
Lodge #2440 in Forest Grove.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, William.
Survivors include his wife; a son,
Robin, of Forest Grove; three daugh­
ters, Judy Britton of Butler, Ala.,
Charlotte Porter of Centralia, Wash.,
and D elores Coffey of Banks; a
brother, Robert of Siletz; three sis­
ters, Roberta Larsen and Joanne Ab­
bott, both of Forest Grove, and Bar­
bara Lee Knapp of Gaston; nine
grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Forest Grove Memorial Chapel
was in charge of arrangements.
