Private in te r­ ment was held. Mr. W endling was bom January 16, 1919, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Clarence and Bessy (Orr) Wendling. He was raised and educated in Cali­ fornia until the age o f 13, when he moved to Oregon with his sister. He joined the U.S. Army in 1940 as a sargeant. In May of 1942 he was captured by the Japanese, in ­ terned in the Phillipines and later in Oeyama, Japan. He was released in Septem ber, 1945. In 1956 he w as se n t to K orea, and to V ietnam in 1965. He was a Command Sergeant M ajor at the time o f his discharge, July 31, 1969. Mr. W endling m arried Mary “Ha- zle” Thom in 1946, in Cottage Grove. They live d in C o tta g e G rove until 1951, when they moved to Monterey, Calif. They later lived in Hawaii until 1 9 56, w hen th e y s e ttle d in La Grande. They moved to Vernonia in 1970. He was a lifetime member of the POW/V.F.W. club, and the Vernonia Golf Club. Mr. W endling w as preceded in death by a son, Cecil James Eddy.
