3. In May, and again on
June 12, we requested
WOEC to allow members to
sit in on in te rvie w s w ith
prospective managers. We
were told at the subcommit
tee meeting (WOEC board-
room, July 2), “The Board
hasn’t voted on it ye t.” Do
they really mean RUS hasn’t
given perm ission for us to
have some say in selecting
our co-op m anager? (See
Ruralite, page 4, bottom right
column.) the true owner of
WOEC is RUS. Do they per
haps even decide the number
of employees to be hired?
4. And d o n 't fo rg e t the
hubbub over WOEC hiring a
PR man in April 1996, when
WORA expected this man to
come to our first public meet
ing on May 5, 1996. This was

about a half-truth?
2. At W O EC’s reg ular
meeting May 21, it took sev
eral questions from members
to get the p re sid e n t of
WOEC, also a legislative lob
byist, to say he tra ve ls to
Washington, D.C., to lobby at
the fe d e ra l le vel a g ainst
deregulation of utility compa
nies and o rg a n iz a tio n s . I
asked him, “And when they
get to the state level, you will
lobby against them there, will
you n o t? ” He answ ered,
“Yes.” At the next WOEC
meeting, June 17, he spoke
favorably of the deregulation
bills, saying we must choose
exactly the right one from the
many b ills now being p ro
cessed. Right for whom? A
change of mind? A half-truth?
WOEC and the gentleman.
Do we have some slippery

To the Editor:
“Damned if you do,
Damned if you don’t.”
I have spoken with many
youths in our community re
garding “Bicycle Riding on
sidewalks.” It appears to be a
confusing, ongoing problem.
Understanding the dangers
of sidewalk riding, our chil
dren and teens are forced to
ride on the city streets. I have
observed on many occasions
drivers honking, threatening
and screaming profanities at
bicycle riders. They (the chil
dren) are following the direc
tions of our police d e p a rt
ment.
I believe our adult drivers
need to become familiar with
our city laws, learn patience
and, most of all, work on be
coming positive role models
for our town’s kids.
