Harwood will attend national Senior Service Conference in D.C.
Nancy Harwood, Columbia
County RSVP Director, will at­
tend the first National Senior
Service Corps Conference,
July 14 to 17, in Washington,
D.C.
She will join 1,300 local
project directors of the Foster
Grandparent, Senior Com­
panion and Retired and Se­
nior Volunteer Programs,
leaders and experts on senior
issues, national and local
elected officials, and repre­
sentatives of the nation’s me­
dia participating in the first-of-
its-kind conference to lay the
groundwork, mobilize and
chart new directions for the
growing senior service.
Senior Corps project direc­
tors will participate in work­
shops designed to strengthen
leadership skills, share strate­
gies for expanding resources,
improve communication skills
and increase the ability of
programs to provide quality
volunteer experiences that
address pressing local needs.
Special attention will also be
given to increased collabora­
tion with community leaders.
First Lady Hillary Rodham
Clinton will deliver the
keynote address to the con-
ference. Prominent policy ex­
perts and members of the na­
tional media will conduct
workshops and training ses­
sions.
The conference is spon-
sored by the Corporation for
National Service, which ad­
ministers the National Senior
Service Corps, AmeriCorps
and Learn and Serve America
programs.
Burch elected president of Vernonia Study Club for the 1996-97 year
The Vernonia Study Club
wound up its 1995-1996 year
with a potluck luncheon at the
home of Frances Lentz. Eight
members were present.
Officers for the upcoming
year have been selected.
Nancy Burch will preside, as­
sisted by Irene Christensen
as vice-president, and Bar­
bara Bergerson as secretary-
treasurer.
The Vernonia Study Club
has been in active more than
60 years since its organiza­
tion in the early 1920s. Self-
improvement and civic better­
ment are the dual goals of the
organizatin.
Each year, the group
chooses a specific theme to
follow. During the year, mem­
bers present programs relat­
ed to the theme. A theme for
1996-97 has not yet been se­
lected.

State Ambassador Weekend,
June 21-23, at Linfield Col­
lege in McMinnville, where
they participated in leader-
