Summer has started with a BANG at the li
brary! This past week set a record for the
number of children’s books that were checked
out. Registration indicates that many will be
attending the Sum m er Reading Program.
Preschool story time attendance continues to
average about a dozen youngsters at each
session, adult circulation continues to im
prove, and many new library patrons are using
the facilities.
With this increased patronage, reminders
might be in order about some of the materials
that are available in the library. Beside the fic
tion sections for adults (yes, we have John Gr
isham ’s, The Rainmaker), young adults (of
course we have R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps
books), and children (certainly, we have Clif
ford, Curious George and Dr. Seuss’ Daisy
Head Mayzie), we have reference materials,
magazines, video tapes and access to the
State Library.
Pre-registration is strongly suggested for
the Summer Reading Program so planning
can be done for the num ber and ages of
youngsters attending. Shadow puppets, paper
plate puppets, and puppets w ith m ovable
arms and legs will be made and will be used
to help “te ir stories adapted for the purpose.
Puppets will be made at each session.
Program dates to keep in mind are July 12,
July 19 and July 26. The grand finale will be
presented by Walter Minkel on Monday, July
31. All other sessions are on Wednesdays. All
programs will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the library
and will last for about an hour, or however
long it takes for all the children who wish to
participate by using their puppets and imagi
nation. Certificates from the Oregon Depart
ment of Education will be given for reading at
least ten books during the program; gift certifi
cates for frozen yogurt from MacDonalds will
be given for participation. The youngsters will
also be entitled to ride on a float during the
Jamboree parade.

and fun.

To the Editor:
I can’t get this out of my
mind.
During all the debate about
the testing of athletes for the
use of dope, one school ad
m inistrator was reported to
have said something like “we
may have to give up som e
small right to protect our stu
dents.”
We Americans do not give
up our rights—they came too
hard!
We pass and hopefully en
force laws within the fram e
w o rk of the w o rld ’s fin e s t

hell will give it back?

defends Hugo
To The Editor:
I must make a few com
m ents re g a rd in g C o m m is
s io n e r B ruce H ugo. I w as
elected to the Oregon House
of R epresentatives in 1984
from Coos County. I have no
previous state governm ent
experience and was therefore
a “real” freshm an legislator
from a rural district badly in
need of a mentor and friend. I
found one in Bruce Hugo.
Bruce was serving his sec
ond term and knew state gov
ernment inside and out. He
gave me a running start that
enabled me to be immediate
ly effective in serving my peo
ple. Bruce is very intelligent
and has an outgoing person
ality. I’ve o fte n said th a t I
would not have served five
te rm s in th e h o use if it
weren’t for Bruce.
Unfortunately, Bruce Hugo
is also a human with human
fa u lts . He has show n the
courage it takes to seek help
for his problem. Bruce Hugo

leases and had it pretty well
wrapped up before our con
victed thief came on board to

As for the other claims, I

House members were doing
while Super Rep. was pass
ing bills left and right? Re
member, it takes 31 votes to
pass any b ill. Incidentally,
H ighway 30 im provem ents
were in the state’s long-range
plans years before the thief
went to Salem.
Folks, let’s not lose sight of
what we’re trying to accom
plish with this recall. We want
to tell all elected officials that
we will not tolerate stealing of
our hard-earned dollars. We
also want to demonstrate to
our children that we expect
high standards from all, expe-
cially those whom we elect to
govern us.
So, do what needs to be
done. Vote “Yes” on your bal
lot to remove this convicted
thief from office and restore
confidence in ou r Board of
Commissioners.

strangers, angels
Dear Three Strangers:
I would like to thank three
p e o p le w ho w ere to ta l
strangers and angels at the
same time. Friday June 16,
1995 at about 11 p.m. my son
Je re m y and his g irlfrie n d
Ja m ie w ere com ing hom e
from Vernonia. On their way
home on that cold, wet and
dark night they made a terri
ble turn and landed in a ditch
u p sid e dow n in th e ir car.
Jerem y said that after they
c lim b e d out of the d itc h a
g e n tle m a n w ho had seen
their lights stopped to help.
Two m ore cars stopped to
help, in one there was a gen
tleman that used his cellular
phone. In the other, Jeremy
said, was a lady who he de
s c rib e d as an A n g e l who
cam e out of nowhere. This
lady had medical experience
so she sat Jamie down in one
o f th e ca rs and w ra p p e d
coats around her. While the
p a ra m e d ic lo o ke d o ve r
Ja m ie , th is lady cam e to
Jeremy and com forted him.
She reassured him and had
some small talk with him. I
would like to thank you fo r
being there and not just say
ing it is someone else’s re
s p o n s ib ility . Your c a rin g
helped two scared and fright
ened young people cope with
a scary experience. Jeremy
and Jam ie are fine, a little
sore but also very thankful.

H ugo’s behavior is
appalling
Dear Editor:
I am appalled that Com
missioner Bruce Hugo contin
ues to defy the voters, and
avoids the one responsible
and respectable action to end
his county government’s em
barrassment: Resignation.
Why would anyone hang
on to an elected office after
being convicted of a crime in
connection with that office?
Bruce Hugo broke the law,
was sen ten ced and fin e d ,
and has sought out and is
now involved in counseling.
So why shouldn’t he just stay
in office and continue as be
fore? The answer is found in
the details.
