The Vernonia senior c iti­
zens enjoyed one of th e ir
most successful Christmas
dinner gatherings in recent
m em ory, as 87 m em bers
gathered to share the festival
meal. Eight other members,
all shut-ins, had the meal de^
livered to their homes. Cap­
ping the o cca sio n was a
Christmas carol concert pre­
sented by Vernonia elemen­
ta ry school stud en ts, who
a lso bro ug ht an a rra y of
hand-crafted Christmas greet­
ing cards for the seniors to
use.
Ja n u a ry w ill be a busy
month, according to Nellie
Tipton, beginning with the first
meeting of the newly consti­
tuted board of directors,on
the 6th. On the same day,
other members will take Col-
co to the Forest Grove Resi­
dential C enter to v isit and
share lunch.
Anticipated by many is a
gre a t s o cia l event on the
17th, when seniors will enjoy
the opportunity to spend an
afternoon reviving and renew­
ing their sense of rhythm, as
a threesome of dancers from
Portland visit the center to
demonstrate and teach both
old and new dance steps.
Posters and invitations will be
sent to other senior centers in
the county, inviting them to
join the party. A minimum do­
nation of $3 pe r person is
suggested to cover expenses
for the program.
Seniors will travel to the
H illsboro Senior C enter on
the 20th to share lunch and
visit with members there.
The center will be closed
on S aturday, Sunday and
Monday of both the C hrist­
mas and New Year w e e k ­
ends.

S. Cox has arrived for duty at
the Royal Air Force Alcon-
bu ry base in C am bridge,
England.
Cox, a television and intru­
sion detectrion systems ap­
p re n tice , is the son of
Gonzales and Dayle Cox of
Vernonia. He is a 1993 grad­
uate of Vernonia High School.
Jerry Preston

Class Jerry Preston recently
com pleted a six-m onth de­
ployment to the western Pa­
D uring the deploym ent,
Preston and other crew mem­
bers served three months off
the coast of Somalia, helping
in the evacuation of U.S. citi­
zens from Rwanda and Bu­
rundi.
Preston is the son of Chris­
tine Preston of Vernonia. He
graduated from Lakeridge
High School, Lake Oswego,
in 1979 and joined the Navy
in 1983.

service will be held Saturday
at 6:00 p.m. at the Vernonia
Evangelical Bible Church.
The s p e c ia l s e rv ic e in ­
cludes singing carols, lighting
the Advent Wreath, Scripture
reading, special music and a
true story about Christm as,
said Pastor Grant Williams.

County United Way
nears goal amount
Through Dec. 14, cash and
pledges for the current United
W ay o f C o lu m b ia C o u n ty
campaign, total $185,669, or
94 percent of the $197,000
goal, according to executive
director Suzanne Arnits.
“W e e x p e c t to c o n tin e
gathering campaign informa­
tion until February, which is
typical,” she said. Anyone in­
