snacks?
It all depends on how you
present those foods. A few
g u id e lin e s to help ensure
smiles:
1. O ffer nutritious foods
with a smile and a pleasant
enthusiastic tone of voice. Do
not assume everyone would
ra th e r have a candy bar,
chips, or a soft drink. Eat nu
tritious snacks yourself—chil-

dren, enjoy what they see
others enjoying.
2. Convenience is impor
tant. Instead of reaching in a
co o kie jar, c h ild re n m ight
reach for an orange if it is
peeled, sectioned and ready
to eat. Other times, involve
child ren in preparing th e ir
own foods, from helping in
the garden, to washing and

preparing simple recipes.
3. Don’t make a practice of

hand. Rem em ber, “O ut of
sight — out of mind. ”
4. Do not expect miracles.
Those who are used to an ar
ray of chips, cookies, soft
drinks and candy, may not ac
cept with g r e a t enthusiasm
your first attempt to provide
them with alternatives. Start
slow ly and try a variety of
new ideas. Even better, start
them on n u tritio u s snacks
v right from the beginning.
5. Food provides the body
w ith nutrition. It should be
used for that purpose and not
as a bribe, reward, or punish
ment.
It’s m id a fte rn o o n , tw o
hours until dinner time. The
cookie jar looks inviting; un
wrapping a candy bar is so
easy, popping open a soft
drink is effortless and fast.
But wait: Is it good for you or
