anks Elementary student will compete in state Geography
Kara Krutsinger, a sixth
grader at Banks Elementary
School, placed first among
th irte e n 4 th , 5th and 6th
grade students for an opppor-
tu n ity to com p ete at the
statewide level of the Nation
al Geography Bee.
The school level competi
tion was all oral; at the state
level, Kara will compete in a
written exam. The first place
winner at state will move on
to com pete at the national
level, with the opportunity to
win a $25,000 college schol-
• i
arship.
This is the first year Banks
Schools have participated in
the National Geography Bee.
The event is sponsored by
National Geographic World
and Chrysler Corporation.

of BES fifth graders. All future
maps will designate the two
waterways as Banks Creek
and Whispering Waters Wet
lands.

and poetry based on their ob
servations and feelings.
They also researched in
form ation on how to name

submitted their suggestions

proved Cheryl Gillson’s desig
n a tio n fo r B anks Creek.
W hispering Water was sub
mitted by Brian Mills.
For the ir efforts, the two
students received sweatshirts
w ith illu s tra tio n s and the
names the board approved.
