Catch the Spirit for
the future, not past
"Catch the Spirit for '91". this year's Friendship
Jamboree theme, was discussed at some length
before it was adopted The discussion centered on a
seem ingly in s ig n ific a n t point - the choice of
prepositions Should the theme be Catch the Spirit of
'91, or /or *91 ?
The latter was chosen because it is not really
possible for people living in this end of the 20th
century to recapture the spirit of the culture generated
a hundred years ago
This period cannot be
measured in time alone, but by the events which
have occurred in that time span
The world we now live in can never be the way it
was - and the values of that prior era have been
modified by a technological revolution that staggers
the imagination
Bob Spencer, our local (almost) centenarian, has
witnessed most of this incredible acceleration of
change.
Most of us have seen the greatest revolution of all
in the realms of communication and transportation
This revolutionary technology has shrunk our world
and forced us to interact and associate with other
peoples of the world
No, there is no turning back of the clock We must
go forward and face the challenges of this remarkable
new world
Catch the Spmt for '91 then for the new century
which will require new ideas, new ways of dealing
with problems in our personal lives, and on into the
sphere of international concerns
Catch the Spirit for '91 In Vernonia, yes, even
here, in the grass roots of society change is in the
air. Many of the changes are unsettling, even
disturbing, but they will not go away The spirit for '91
demands aggressive, positive approaches
Indeed, Catch the Spirit for '911
Please drive carefully
There have been some near tragedies during
Jam boree because so many people must cross
Highway 47 to go from one event to another. If you're
driving in Vernonia that weekend, please be extra
careful. Let's keep it a joyous occasion for everyone
