Work of artist Grothe at Seaside Library
The Seaside Public Library presents an exhibit original pho-
tography pieces by Kelly Grothe through Aug. 30. The pieces
feature various landscape and wilderness images from around
the North Coast. The show is displayed in the community room
and foyer.
Grothe’s love of landscape and wildlife photography began
in 2006 when he visited Brazil and saw the beautiful surround-
ings of the countryside. Since then, he has grown to enjoy being
in the outdoors and fi nding himself looking at his surroundings
diff erently. He enjoys the color of nature found in a sunrise or
sunset, the changing colors of the trees in the fall, as well as the
peaceful singing of the birds in the trees.
Kelly Grothe was born in Roseau, Minnesota, into a family
with fi ve siblings and moved to Astoria when he was a teenager.
He lives in Astoria with his wife and enjoys spending time with
their two adult children as well as pursuing his creative endeav-
ors which also includes woodworking.
The Seaside Public Library is located at 1131 Broadway. For

A look at the Elizabethan age
On Saturday, July 16, at 2 p.m., the Friends of Seaside Pub-
lic Library features author Deena Lindstedt, who will be giving
a book talk on her historical novel, “Lady of the Play.”
Palace intrigue, gossip, and Elizabethan lifestyle are interwo-
ven with a modern story of Cynthia Parsons, a high school his-
tory teacher, along with her friends, who search for evidence to
prove that not only was Ely and Edward collaborators in writ-
ing the plays and sonnets, but that Ely was also related to Queen
Elizabeth the fi rst. Having found the evidence she seeks, there
are those who will use any means to keep her from revealing
the truth.
A Q&A and book-signing follow the talk. The event will be
held in the Community Room of the Seaside Public Library.
Deena Lindstedt is an expert in Shakespeare’s England.
Her academic paper, “Shakespeare, Perhaps a Woman,” was
delivered to a distinguished audience at the 2011 Shakespeare
Authorship Symposium. She retired early to pursue her dream
of becoming a novelist, went back to college, and graduated at
age 70 with a bachelor of arts in English literature and writing
from Marylhurst University.
The Seaside Public Library is located at 1131 Broadway. For
more information call 503-738-6742 or visit www.seasideli-

Will Kleemeier launched
his cross-country bike jour-
ney in Seaside on June 17.
Kleemeier, 58, who has
polycystic kidney disease
— a chronic, genetic dis-
ease — is riding to raise
awareness of the disease,
which aff ects 60,000 Amer-
icans and is the fourth lead-
ing cause of kidney failure.
The cysts can cause
fl ank pain and back, he said.
“It’s a hidden disease. Cysts
grow in quantity and size
until your kidneys get quite
large.”
He hopes that his ride
will shine a light on the
impact of the disease on
the people and families it
aff ects.
Local students graduate from OSU

during ceremonies this month.
Local students graduating include Hunter Thompson, of
Gearhart. He graduates with a bachelor of science degree,

To lessen discomfort, his
bikes are such that “their
geometry fi ts my condi-

ing over like a race bike.
It’s more of a touring bike.
It does take my mind off of
the condition.”
Kleemeier drove west
with his 18-year-old son
Patrick, who will drive
the vehicle back on the
return and serve as support
vehicle.
Patrick, Will’s 18-year-

Patrick and dad Will Kleemeier in Seaside prior to the start of
their cross-country ride.
the way back, Patrick will
drive the van and serve
as support, with meeting
points throughout the day.
They will stay at campsites
along the way.
Their fi rst route is the
Lewis and Clark Trail from
Seaside to Missoula, Mon-
tana. They had been going
to pass through Yellowstone
Park, he said, but fl ooding
has made that problematic
and they will likely take a
more northern route.
He hopes to cover 65
miles a day for a Aug. 15
arrival in Ocean City, New
Jersey.
They have 10 sponsors
so far, but Kleemeier said
he “would be happy to have
more.”
