Public art collection
unveiling at
convention center
The Seaside Civic and Con-
vention Center will unveil its
new permanent public art col-
lection during a community
event featuring food, bever-
ages and live music on July 8
from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Public artworks on display
include painting, printmaking,
photography, textile art, wood-
work, metalwork and glass art.
Some of the artists from the
project will be in attendance
during the reveal party.
Drea Frost served as curator
on this project, which began
following completion of the
convention center’s extensive
renovation and expansion in
2020, working alongside the
center’s general manager Russ
Vandenberg and members of
the Seaside Civic and Conven-
tion Center Commission.
‘From Sea to
Shining Sea’ band
program
The North Coast Sym-
phonic Band concludes its
42nd season with a con-
cert titled “From Sea to Shin-
ing Sea” at 7 p.m. on Sunday,
July 3, at the Liberty Theater in
Astoria. Brett Paschal will be
guest conductor.
The concert features a mix
of American favorites, includ-
ing several marches, med-
leys and more. The tradi-
tional Armed Forces medley,
will also be performed, and a
rousing rendition of Stars and
Stripes Forever. The MC is
Brian Bergman.
Concert conductor Pas-
chal is the director of bands
at Lewis and Clark College in
Portland, where he is also the
percussion instructor. He is the
drummer for the group, Three
Leg Torso.
This concert will be free
to the public. Donations are
gratefully accepted. The Lib-
erty is located on the corner of
12th and Commercial Street
in Astoria. Check the Liberty
website for current COVID
requirements.
The band’s 43rd season
begins this fall, led by the
new NCSB director, Terry
Dahlgren. Concert dates are
Nov. 20, Feb. 12, 2023, April
23, 2023, and July 3, 2023.

Call for art
at Trail’s End
Trail’s End Art Association
calls all local artists to partici-
pate in the 71st annual judged
show. The show takes place
from Aug. 5 to Aug. 27.
The opening reception will
be held on 6, from 2 to 5 p.m.
with the award ceremony start-
ing at 3 p.m.

Big Brass Bash
in Astoria
The 36th annual Northwest
Big Brass Bash will take place
July 8 to July 10 in Astoria at
the Charlene Larson Center for
the Performing Arts. The event
is a two-day festival for the
tuba and euphonium commu-
nity to gather for music and fun
and to learn from world-class
tuba and euphonium guest art-
ists. The Astoria Tuba Quartet
will host the weekend event.
Adult and students ninth
grade and higher players are
welcomed from the Pacifi c
Northwest as well as nearby
Canadian Provinces. Two
events, both free and open to
the public, are planned.
The fi rst, a recital show-
case, will take place at 3 p.m.
on Saturday July 9. The second
event is a free public concert
on Sunday, July 10, at 2 p.m.
All events take place at the Per-
forming Arts Center.

The Trail’s End Art Associ-
ation will open a new show for
July featuring member Kathy
Karbo with “Pulse: Paper
Play.” At a reception on July 2,
during the Gearhart Art Walk,
2 to 5 p.m., where Karbo will
demonstrate her techniques.
The show will be open Fri-
days, Saturdays and Sundays,
10 a.m. to 5 p.m., from July 1
to July 23.
Karbo has worked as a per-
forming and visual artist for
over 35 years.
Basketry was her entrance
to the world of art and craft.
From there, her affi nity for
sculpture has led her to explore
book arts, fi ber arts, puppetry,
mosaic and metal arts. Her
work has won awards and
been exhibited both nation-
ally and in Canada. Karbo
will teach “Eye Candy: Paper
Sculpture,” at the art associa-
tion in August.
She has taught at Sitka Cen-
ter for the Arts and Ecology, the
Newport Paper, and Book Arts
festival, TEAA in Gearhart and
Astor Elementary School.
Trail’s End is the oldest
nonprofi t art association of its
kind on the Coast. In addition
to new gallery shows of orig-
inal art that changes monthly,
there is also an entry gallery
featuring prints, greeting cards,
jewelry, pottery and more.
