Linn-Benton claims
baseball conference
title with local help
The Astorian
The Linn-Benton Roadrun-
ners defeated Mt. Hood Com-
munity College last Tuesday
afternoon, in the championship
game of the Northwest Ath-
letic Conference 2022 baseball
season.
The game had several
Clatsop County and south-
west Washington connec-
tions, as the Linn-Benton ros-
ter includes Warrenton’s Jake
Morrow, Astoria graduate
Dylan Rush, and Ethan Lind-
strom of Naselle.
The trio is in its third year at
Linn-Benton, but all three are
freshman in eligibility. Mean-
while, Knappa’s Eli Takalo
is a freshman pitcher for Mt.
Hood.
Morrow was 0-for-3 with
a walk in his final game with
Linn-Benton.
Lindstrom
played but did not have an offi-
cial at-bat, while Rush and
Takalo did not play.
To get to the champi-
onship game, Linn-Benton
defeated Lane Community
College (9-3), Edmonds (6-1)
and Lower Columbia College
(2-1), with a 15-7 loss to Ever-
ett last Monday.
Morrow was 3-for-4, drew a
walk and scored twice in Mon-
day’s loss. He was 2-for-4 with
a triple and drove in a run in
the win over Lower Columbia;
and he walked three times with
one hit and scored three runs in
the victory over Edmonds.
Morrow received the tour-
nament’s Designated Hitter
award on the all-tournament
team.
Gary Henley/The Astorian
Warrenton senior Avyree Miethe pitched and hit the Warrior softball team to a
second place finish in league play this season. She was selected as the Coastal
Range League Player of the Year.

league honors

Debbie Morrow
Flanked by Linn-Benton teammates Rhett Larson, left, and Kian
Hogan, right, Warrenton’s Jake Morrow poses with the Northwest
Athletic Conference championship trophy.
In 40 games for the Road-
runners this season, Mor-
row hit .262 (37-for-141), and
scored 24 runs with nine dou-
bles and three triples.
A catcher with Linn-Ben-
ton, Morrow will play this
summer for the Okotok Dawgs
in Canada, returns home in
August, then will begin attend-
ing and playing baseball for
the University of Washington
next fall.
Lindstrom batted .233 with
a pair of doubles this season,
while Rush was 1-1 on the
mound, with one save and a
3.00 earned run average.
SPORTS BRIEFS
Seaside over
Warrenton in junior
baseball
Seaside and Warrenton
opened the summer junior base-
ball season Tuesday as the Gulls
held off the Warriors, 3-2.
All the scoring took place
over the fourth and fifth innings,
with Seaside scoring two runs
in the fifth on a wild pitch and a
passed ball.
Seaside pitchers Cameron
Schulte and Luke Calhoun held
Warrenton to just one hit, with
a combined 11 strikeouts and
six walks. Warrenton’s Dawson
Little tossed a two-hitter with
eight strikeouts and two walks.
Nine Loggers earn
all-league honors
Just as they have dominated
Northwest League baseball on
the field the past 10 years, the
Knappa Loggers also dominate
the annual all-league team.
It was no different in 2022, as
every starter for league cham-
pion Knappa earned all-league
honors, with senior Drew Miller
selected as both the league
Player of the Year and Pitcher
of the Year. Coach of the Year
honors went to Dwayne Nowlin
of St. Paul, which finished sec-
ond (14-4) behind the Loggers.
Knappa (18-0 in league play,
21-5 overall) had nine total
selections, including six first
team and three second team
players. Earlier this week, Drew
Miller was named as a first
team catcher, and Mark Miller
as a first team outfielder on the
2A/1A all-state team.
And the Loggers should be
locked in as state title contend-
ers for several more years, as
junior pitcher Nick Rusinovich
and sophomore pitcher Jaxon
Dietrichs were both selected
second team all-state.
The Miethe family swept
the top individual awards this
year, on the Coastal Range
All-League softball team,
as voted on by the league’s
coaches.
Senior Avyree Miethe —
who recently signed a letter of
intent to play at Blue Moun-
tain Community College next
season — was selected as the
league’s Player of the Year,
while mom Staci Miethe was
named Coach of the Year.
In all, the Warriors had six
players selected all-league
(including four sophomores
and one freshman), while
league champion Taft had
seven all-leaguers.
The Coastal Range League
will look much different next
school year.
Warrenton and Rainier will
be the only two teams return-
ing to the league. The Coastal
Range will lose league cham-
pion Taft, along with Clats-
kanie and Willamina.
Joining the league will
be Banks, Corbett, Neah-
Kah-Nie, Riverdale and
Yamhill-Carlton.
Banks and Corbett both
lost in the first round of the
4A state playoffs this sea-
son, while No. 1-ranked
Yamhill-Carlton lost the
3A state championship to
Burns, 3-1.
