Miss Oregon: ‘We believe it’s the only
state pageant that has been held in the
same community for its entire existence’
Continued from Page A1
with a look back at Miss
Oregon program’s origins.
“In honor of our 75th
anniversary, we have joined
forces with the Seaside
Museum,” McShane said.
There will be a pop-up
exhibit at the Seaside
Museum & Historical Soci-
ety featuring gowns and
memorabilia through the
decades.
The idea for a pag-
eant came from a Chamber
of Commerce committee,
chaired by Seaside Signal
owner and publisher Max
Schafer, Teresa Taylor, of
the Seaside Museum & His-
torical Society, said.
“They pursued the project
with the Miss America orga-
nization and were granted
the authority to operate the
pageant,” Taylor said. “It
has been a mainstay of Sea-
side summers for its full 75
years.”
It moved from its begin-
nings in Seaside school
auditoriums and gyms to
the 1970s when it moved to
its current home at the Sea-
side Civic and Convention
Center.
“While we can’t say for
sure, we believe it’s the only
state pageant that has been
held in the same community
for its entire existence,” Tay-
lor said.
The pop-up exhibit will
feature Katie Harmon Ebner,
‘WE ARE HAPPY TO REPORT THAT,
DESPITE THE SETBACKS THAT
COVID-19 HAS BROUGHT, IT HAS
ALSO BROUGHT SOME UNIQUE
OPPORTUNITIES AND PERSPECTIVE
ON HOW IMPORTANT SMALL
BUSINESSES ARE TO THE SEASIDE
ECONOMY.’
Beth McShane, director of the Miss Oregon Scholarship Program
Oregon’s only Miss America
to date. She was crowned
Miss Oregon in July 2001,
and after a delayed Miss
America pageant due to the
terrorist attacks on 9/11, she
was crowned Miss Amer-
ica on Sept. 22, 2001, Tay-
lor said.
“She found herself vis-
iting Ground Zero in New
York and much of her reign
focused on 9/11 and Ameri-
ca’s recovery,” she said.
Ebner will attend this
year’s event and perform
at the Saturday night fi nal
competition.
The program comes with
events inside and outside
the convention center, with
a SOLVE beach cleanup
activity on June 15 from
noon to 3 p.m. Preliminaries
take place Thursday and Fri-
day nights.
The traditional Miss Ore-
gon Parade takes place June
18 at 1 p.m. and the fi nal
competition at 7 p.m.
“For the Miss Oregon
Scholarship Program, this
year signifi es a year of
growth and perseverance,”
McShane said. “With new
leadership stepping in last
year mid-pandemic, there
have been some very real
challenges. We are happy to
report that, despite the set-
backs that COVID-19 has
brought, it has also brought
some unique opportuni-
ties and perspective on
how important small busi-
nesses are to the Seaside
economy.”
This year’s program win-
ner will have a tough act to
follow.
Miss Oregon 2021 Abi-
gail Hayes placed fourth
runner-up to Miss Amer-
ica 2021, Emma Broyles.
Hayes will also take the
stage to share her “top fi ve”
performance at the fi nal
competition.
Miss Clatsop County Lilly Boothe was crowned in March.

Smith: Is a property
owner and manager
Continued from Page A1
Cockrum’s decision to
resign came the day after
a heated meeting in which
speakers called for a coun-
cil recall. Cockrum cited
personal reasons when she
resigned.
“I believe it’s going to be
a challenge being mayor, in
that we have such a polariza-
tion of the population among
the voters in Gearhart,”
Smith said. “I’m going to try
and work with all sides and
fi nd a resolution for this fi re
station.”
He said he will start with
a town hall.
“That’s going to be my
focus for the summer is try-
ing to work with these diverse
groups of people that feel
that they’ve got some — I
don’t want to call them more
important — but they’ve got
an important message they
want to deliver to everybody.
I want to be able to listen to
it. But I’m certainly my own
person. I will do what I feel is
right for the city.”
Smith, 68, is a property
owner and manager.
Smith was elected to the
council in 2014. In 2018
he won reelection, running
against Jack Zimmerman, a
leading opponent of the fi re
bond.
A majority of the remain-
ing councilors appoint a
replacement to serve the
unexpired portion of Smith’s
Position 1 term.
“My message to the vot-
ers of Gearhart is we need to
move on and not dwell on the
past anymore,” Smith said.
