Gordon Houston, a full- time Portland fi refi ghter, continues to volunteer in Seaside and serve as volun- teer deputy chief, he helps coordinate all the recruit- ment, including the resi- dent volunteer program, currently with four interns participating. “We’ve been pretty suc- cessful over the years, with volunteers and our resident program,” Houston said. “Since I’ve been here for 20 years, we’ve had close to 50 people get jobs full time, some of them here.” The interns live in rooms above the station. “This program has been crucial for not only the students but to assist with staffi ng calls,” Daniels said. Even with the extra help the levy could bring, volunteers remain essen- tial, volunteer association president Jason Schermer- horn said. “That’s really the backbone of the fi re department,” he said. “We do a lot of work and I’m learning something new every day while helping people.
