Seaside boys top North Marion, 64-52
The Astorian
The Seaside boys bas-
ketball team bounced back
from a loss to Marshfi eld
with a 64-52 nonleague win
over North Marion, last Fri-
day night at Seaside.
The game was closer than
the fi nal score indicated, as
the Huskies were within
54-48 late in the fourth quar-
ter, before North Marion
started fouling and didn’t
stop until the Gulls hit six
straight free throws, and out-
scored the Huskies 10-4 in
the fi nal minutes.
Seaside’s largest lead in
the fi rst half came at the end
of the fi rst quarter (11-5),
matched later at 23-17 fol-
lowing consecutive scores
by Cash Corder.
North Marion relied on
3-pointers by Cole Ham-
mack and Dylan Herron, and
two scores by Evan Holman
that brought the Huskies into
a 25-25 tie at halftime.
But no team has been
able to stop the Gulls from
the 3-point line, where Sea-
side sank four shots in the
third quarter from Ever
Sibony, Izzy Jantes, Car-
son Kawasoe and Corder,
helping the Gulls build a
46-38 lead by the end of the
quarter.
Seaside led by six points
with just under two min-
utes left, when an off ensive
rebound basket by Corder
sparked a 10-0 run.
Sibony led all scorers
with 21 points, followed by
Corder with 17. Three play-
ers scored in double fi gures
for North Marion, which
was coming off a 76-43 win
over Valley Catholic.

Two of the top three

4A boys basketball coaches
poll met at a neutral site last
Wednesday night, and No.
3-ranked Marshfi eld got the
best of No. 2-ranked Sea-
side, 60-50. The contest was
held at Toledo.
The two teams could
meet again at another neu-
tral site, such as March 12
in Forest Grove with a state
championship on the line.
The Pirates scored the
win Wednesday, rallying
from an 11-point defi cit in
the fi rst half.
The Gulls were on fi re
from the 3-point line early
on, hitting fi ve of their fi rst
eight 3-pointers. Led by
Carson Kawasoe’s three
treys, Seaside was 6-for-13
from the arc in the fi rst half,
better than the Pirates were
from the free throw line
(4-of-12).
Yet Marshfi eld still found
itself trailing just 26-24 at
halftime.
The Gulls could not
maintain their pace in
the second half, as Sea-
side made just two of their
12 3-point attempts, while
Marshfi eld opened the third
quarter with a quick 13-4
run.
A bank shot by Dominic
Montiel gave the Pirates a
37-30 advantage, a 3-pointer
from Montiel made it 40-31,
and Montiel highlighted the
quarter by inbounding the
ball off the back of a Seaside
defender, scoring, drawing a
foul and completing a three-
point play for a 43-36 lead
after three quarters.
A 3-pointer by Seaside’s
Ever Sibony had the Gulls
within 49-44 with just over
three minutes left, but the
Pirates fi nally started sink-
ing their free throws, where
they fi nished 18-for-31, to
Seaside’s 5-for-8.
Sibony led the Gulls with
24 points, 17 in the second
half. Kawasoe had 11 before
fouling out. Montiel and
Pierce Davidson each had
20 points for the Pirates.

Seaside snapped a six-
game losing skid by scor-
ing a season-high in points
last Friday night at home,
in a 42-39 nonleague girls
basketball win over North
Marion.
Lilli Taylor poured in a
game-high 25 points, and
the Gulls needed all of it, as
North Marion nearly pulled
off an improbable fourth
quarter comeback.
Trailing 31-18 after
three quarters, the Huskies
scored 21 in the fourth, pull-
ing to within 40-37 follow-
ing a 3-pointer by Laura
Cabrero with under a minute
remaining.
The Gulls eventually
closed it out at the free throw
line, where Taylor and Abby
Nofi eld combined to make
5-of-6 in the fi nal minute
to clinch the victory, help-
ing Seaside improve to 4-9
overall.
Taylor scored 13 of her
points in the third quarter.

The Taft boys scored vic-

the Gulls topped Astoria,

On the girls side, Asto-

scoring Taft (74-48) and Sea-
side (80-46), while the Lady
Gulls defeated Taft, 55-51.
Just the second meet for

Marshfi eld tops Seaside
After narrowly defeating
Seaside 28-26 in Astoria’s
Vince Dulcich Memorial
Tournament just two weeks
earlier, the Marshfi eld girls
basketball team cruised past
the Lady Gulls on a neutral
court last Wednesday night
in Toledo, 38-14.
The Pirates scored the
fi rst nine points of the game
before Seaside battled back
to within 11-5 early in the
second quarter.
Marshfi eld ended the fi rst
half with a running jump
shot from Kate Miles, and
Charlie Dea was fouled on
a 3-pointer at the buzzer to
end the half, and made all
three free throws for an 18-7
advantage.
The second half belonged
to the Pirates, who outscored
the Gulls 20-7 over the fi nal
16 minutes.
Marshfi eld had seven
players in the scoring col-
umn, but none in double fi g-
ures. Miles led with nine
points. Lilli Taylor had a
team-high seven for Seaside.
