By R.J. MARX
Seaside Signal
The Seaside City Coun-
cil paid tribute to Ameri-
ca’s war veterans last Mon-
day night.
At the City Council meet-
ing, Seaside Fire Chief Joey
Daniels read a proclamation
in honor of those who have
risked their lives to preserve
the country’s liberty.
“They have shown their
heights to which Americans
can rise when inspired to
do so,” Daniels said. “Our
courageous troops in Iraq,
Afghanistan and around
the globe have earned their
place alongside previous
generations of great Amer-
icans. They’ve selfl essly
made tour after tour, in con-
fl icts spanning a decade.”
Long after leaving the
uniform behind, many vet-
erans continue to serve the
country as public servants
and mentors, parents and
community leaders, the
proclamation reads.
The proclamation hon-
ors Nov. 11 as Veterans
Remembrance Day, encour-
aging Americans to rec-
ognize and remember the
valor and sacrifi ce of vet-
erans through appropriate
public ceremonies and pri-
vate prayers.
Councilors unanimously
approved the proclama-
tion. Mayor Jay Barber was
absent.
On Nov. 11, Seaside
Chamber of Commerce
ambassadors will display
fl ags at local businesses,
putting the fl ags up in the
morning and taking them
down at the end of the day.
Businesses seeking fl ags
may contact the chamber.
American Legion Post
99 will observe the day
with an early bird dinner
for members. The public is
invited and nonmembers are
invited at $10 a plate. Din-
ner of pork loin, mashed
potatoes and vegetables will
be served from 4 to 7 p.m.

Samaritans, Seaside Aquarium lend assist to sea turtle
Seaside Signal
A 50-pound olive ridley
sea turtle was found 1 mile
north of the Peter Iredale
shipwreck in Hammond by
Samuel K. Gardner. The turtle
appeared dead at fi rst, Seaside
Aquarium staff reported last
Thursday, but shortly after
fi nding the animal, Gardner
realized that it was still alive
and contacted the aquarium.
Gardner was joined by
Alec and Corinne Reeves,
who just happened to be
walking on the beach.
As the tide continued to
come in and the surf raged up
the beach, they decided that it
would be best to get the tur-
tle to a more secure location.
Usually, it is best not to move
a sea turtle until responders
arrive but in this case it was
necessary if the turtle was
going to survive. Gardner
and Alec Reeves carried the
turtle more than a mile and
were able to meet up with the
responding staff from Seaside
Aquarium.
The turtle was quickly
loaded up and taken to the
aquarium for evaluation.
It was one of the most
active sea turtles staff at the
aquarium had dealt with in a
long time, staff reported, an

utes after the turtle arrived at
Seaside Aquarium staff was
informed that not only was
the Oregon Coast Aquarium
ready and prepared to take in
cold, stunned sea turtles, but
that they had another olive
ridley sea turtle en route.
The second turtle was
found on the southern Ore-
gon coast. Staff from the
Seaside Aquarium drove
the turtle down to the Ore-
gon Coast Aquarium, one
of two licensed rehabilita-
tion facilities for sea turtles
in the Pacifi c Northwest. The
other facility is the Seattle
Aquarium.
