A6 • Friday, August 20, 2021 | Seaside Signal | SeasideSignal.com SPORTS Seven Gulls on all-league team Seaside Signal Three Coaches of the Year for Clatsop County Gary Henley/Seaside Signal In his fi rst year as Seaside baseball coach, Brett Wolfe was one of two Coaches of the Year in the Cowapa League. Seaside Signal COWAPA ALL-LEAGUE For the fi rst time since 2014 (not counting the can- celed 2020 season), no base- ball team from Clatsop County played for a state championship in the short- ened 2021 spring season. Still, for the locals, the season featured three league Coaches of the Year, two league champions and one Player of the Year. Warrenton and Knappa came the closest, both advancing to the fi nal eight of the unoffi cial state tour- naments for 3A and 2A, respectively. At the 4A level, Seaside’s Brett Wolfe — in his fi rst year with the Gulls — was named as one of the Coach Jeff TerHar Seaside softball coaches Jessica Garrigues and Joel Dierickx with the Gulls’ three seniors from the 2021 season, from left, Emma Taylor, Kandice Flaigg and Gracie Rhodes. All three were Cowapa all-league, as were seven of Seaside’s nine starters. The Braves had all nine starters earn all-league hon- ors, including Player of the Year Charlie White and Pitcher of the Year Riley Harbaugh. Seaside had six players on the all-league team. In the Class 3A Coastal Range League, Warrenton’s Lennie Wolfe was selected as Coach of the Year for the 12th time, while all nine Warrior starters — seven of whom return next season — earned all-league honors. Knappa’s Jeff Miller was Coach of the Year in the 2A Northwest League, with Logger junior Drew Miller the Player of the Year. The Banks Braves swept the post-sea- son awards for Cowapa League softball in 2021. In addition to having every starter on the all- league squad, the Braves had the Player of the Year (sophomore Olivia Wyatt), the Pitcher of the Year (senior Brooke Van- dehey) and the Desig- nated Player of the Year (senior Jessica Stewart), while Rosi Contri, of Banks, and Joy Richard- son, of Tillamook, shared the Coaches of the Year honor. The fi ve-team Cowapa League had all fi ve start- ing shortstops on the fi rst team. The No. 1 pitcher for each team was also selected all-league, with four on the fi rst team. It was also a great year to be a Gull, as Seaside had a pitcher, catcher, all four infi elders and one outfi elder earn all- league honors. Six Asto- ria players were named all-league. In the 3A Coastal Range League, state champion Clatskanie dominated the selections, with 11 players earning all-league honors. The Tigers defeated Rain- ier in the unoffi cial 3A state championship game this spring. Warrenton’s lone selection was junior Avyree Miethe, to the fi rst team. The Warriors also earned the league’s sportsmanship award. BEST BREAKFAST IN TOWN!
