OBITUARIES
Larry Joe Peters Jr.
CONSTRUCTION
Cannon Beach
Feb. 20, 1968 — July 15, 2021
Larry Joe Peters Jr., the
son of Larry J. and Nancy L.
Peters, was born on Feb. 20,
1968, at the Willamette Falls
Hospital in Oregon City. He
died on July 15, 2021, at
home, from cancer. He was
52 years old.
Larry is survived by his
parents and four children,
Dylan J. Peters, of Colorado
Springs, Colorado, McKen-
zie D. Peters, of Ashland,
Bennett L. Peters, of Lake
George, Texas, and Raven
E. Dusick, of Astoria. Dylan
and Rachael blessed him
with Delylah Grace, a pre-
cious granddaughter.
He’s also survived by
his sister, Lori J. Peters, in
West Linn and, sadly, was
preceded in death by his
brother, Darrin J. Peters.
Thankfully, his family, all of
his children and many of his
friends were there to com-
fort and spend time during
the fi nal days.
Larry and his fam-
ily moved from West Linn
to Eugene to Beaverton to
Fairfax, Virginia, to Denver
and to San Francisco, before
settling in idyllic Cannon
Beach in 1982.
Larry graduated from
Seaside High School in
1986 and attended the Uni-
versity of Oregon.
Larry loved Cannon
Beach — the overwhelm-
ing scenic beauty, the com-
fort of a close-knit, support-
ive community, the nearness
of family and the camarade-
rie of many friends. He was
also part of extended fami-
lies as a cook at the Whaler,
Bill’s Tavern and the Warren
House Pub, which were very
important to him.
Larry Peters Jr.
Larry was a great travel
buddy. Road-tripping from
Cannon Beach to Key West,
Florida, with high school
friends; fi shing in New Zea-
land, cooking on a “barbie”
in Australia; going on safari
in Kenya and Tanzania; vis-
iting temples in Thailand;
riding vintage cars in Cuba;
dancing the tango and eating
B oB M c E wan c onstruction ,
marvelous beef in Uruguay
and Argentina; and feasting
at a luau in Hawaii, a bar-
becue joint in Austin and
Dooky Chase’s renowned
chicken in New Orleans.
And, always going back
to Puerto Escondido and
Zihuatanejo just one more
time.
Larry also enjoyed golf,
music and occasionally
playing his harmonica. He
was a member of the Can-
non Beach Post 168 Sons of
the American Legion.
Larry was a light that
brightened our lives with
kindness and humor. This is
a sad time, but memories of
him will be strong and full
of joyous times.

Richard Francis Sabol
Funeral & Cremation Services
Gearhart
Oct. 11, 1937 — July 13, 2021
Richard Francis Sabol
lived a wonderful life, full
of love, family, friends, fi sh-
ing, hunting and culinary
pursuits. Rick was known
to many, and loved by all
— a truly friendly face, who
picked up friends wherever
he went.
Born to John and Theresa
Sabol in Bethlehem, Penn-
sylvania, and the spoiled
youngest brother of two
older sisters, Rick graduated
from Lehigh University as a
two-sport varsity athlete in
swimming and soccer.
Rick then enrolled in
offi cer candidate school in
Newport, Rhode Island,
and could be seen racing his
MG down the famed Ocean
Drive.
He spent four years on a
naval destroyer traveling the
world. As a gunnery offi cer,
Richard Francis Sabol
Rick patrolled the waters off
of Cuba during the Cuban
missile blockade, report-
ing Soviet activity from sea
and air. Rick and his crew
actively rescued Cuban emi-
gres from the waters, and
safely delivered them to
waiting U.S. Coast Guard
boats off the coast of Miami.
Upon completion of his
military duty, Rick started
a career with the Bethle-
hem Steel Co., joining his
father and two brothers-in-
law. During his fi rst posting
in Minneapolis, Minnesota,
Rick met the love of his life,
Karen Penfi eld, whom he
quickly dubbed Penny. They
were married for 54 years.
His illustrious career
took Rick, Penny and their
growing family all over the
U.S. and, upon retirement,
he settled in coastal Ore-
gon, where he enjoyed his
new life on the West Coast.
Rick enjoyed crabbing in his
Boston whaler, golf, poker
nights with his buddies
and a good bratwurst from
his favorite Portland area
market.
Rick was an accom-
plished
fl y
fi sherman,
hunter, golfer and maker of
his famed steak sandwiches.
He passed his love of these
hobbies to his three chil-
dren, Rick, Scott and Tif-
fany. His fi ve grandchildren
will remember his dubi-
ous driving lessons, applied
equally to cars and golf
carts. Rick’s son-in-law,
Brian, and daughter-in-law,
Colleen, will miss his sense
of humor, and encyclopedic
knowledge, most of all.
Due to the coronavirus
pandemic, a mass of Chris-
tian burial will be held in
October, and his ashes will
be interred at Willamette
National Cemetery.

Three-car collision
Troopers responded to U.S.
Highway 101 by Beerman Creek
Lane July 4 at 3:59 p.m. for a
report of a three-car collision.
Investigation showed traffi c was
moving very slowly when one
driver came up from behind,
rear-ending another driver.
That vehicle moved forward
and struck another vehicle. Two
people were transported to
Columbia Memorial Hospital
for injuries. Gary’s Tow removed
two of the cars. The third was
drivable. None of the drivers or
passengers were local.
Fight reported
A man and a woman were
reported physically fi ghting
in a car July 5 at Hug Point in
Cannon Beach. On arrival, there
were no signs of injury but the
man had a release agreement
prohibiting him from having
contact with the woman. The
release agreement also prohib-
ited him from using alcohol or
marijuana, both of which had
occurred. Ernesto Cruz, 38 from
Hillsboro, was taken into custo-
dy to be lodged at the Clatsop
County jail.

down a steep embankment.
The home was not damaged
and the driver wasn’t hurt.
