Seaside’s Joel Dierickx, in his days as Seaside baseball coach. Dierickx will be trading baseball for softball this spring.
Dierickx named interim Seaside softball coach
Seaside Signal
Joel Dierickx is offi cially
the new softball coach at
Seaside High School.
Dierickx takes over for
Jessica Garrigues, who will
step away from her head
coaching duties for one year
while on parental leave. The
news was announced at a
recent school district board
meeting last month .
Garrigues plans to return
in 2022. She will continue to
serve as a volunteer coach.
A longtime baseball
coach with the Gulls, Dier-
ickx becomes the seventh
head coach for Seaside soft-
ball since 2015.
Dierickx was an assis-
tant to Garrigues last year,
after spending 21 years as
the Seaside baseball coach,
stepping down after the
2018 season.
“I will be stepping back
into the head coach role next
season (2022), and we have
a plan in place for this sea-
son,” Garrigues said. “We
have lots to accomplish this
season and in the future,
and we have plans in place
to make that happen … not
simply promises and hopes.
Stay on the lookout for our
continued growth.”
Seaside recently opened
its Broadway Field batting
cage facility, for use by both
baseball and softball.

Two former Seaside
Seagulls were in the college
sports news over the past
few weeks.
Fresno State women’s
basketball senior Maddi Utti
helped lead the Bulldogs to
their 14th overall win Feb.
21 , an 82-61 victory at San
Diego State.
Utti scored 19 points and
grabbed seven rounds with
four assists and three steals,
the fourth time in the last
six games with at least four
assists, and her most points
since scoring 20, Jan. 23 vs.
Boise State.
Fresno State was com-
ing off a 79-77 loss at San
Diego State just one day
earlier.
After an 11-0 run by the
Aztecs into the second quar-
ter, the Bulldogs answered
with a 15-2 stretch sparked
by seven points from Utti.
“Maddi really helped
out tonight,” said Fresno
State coach Jaime White.
“I thought she was very
aggressive offensively. I
thought our press was better.
We forced (the Aztecs) into
15 turnovers. Good team
win and good second night.”
Last week, UNLV swept
Fresno State in a pair of
close games, 68-66 and
75-74.
