A2 • Friday, January 15, 2021 | Seaside Signal | SeasideSignal.com OBITUARY Jerry Danial (Dannie) Nichols Svensen Oct. 24, 1940 — Jan. 3, 2021 Jerry Danial (Dannie) Nichols, 80, passed away on Jan. 3, 2021, at home in Svensen, from complications of COVID-19. Dannie was born in Asto- ria on Oct. 24, 1940, to Joe and Bessie Nichols. Dan- nie went to school in Ham- mond until the family moved to Gearhart. Dannie attended Seaside High School and graduated in 1958. After graduation, Dannie joined the U.S. Army, where he served in Missouri and Spokane, Washington, for three years. Dannie was a commer- cial fi sherman and crab- ber for many years, and in 1996 moved to Coquille to work for the Coquille Water- shed Association, helping to restore salmon habitat. Dan- nie retired in 2004, and they moved to Arizona for winters and Coquille in the summers. Finally, in 2012, Dannie and Lani moved to Svensen, where he lived until his death. Dannie married his fi rst wife, Donna, in 1958. They had three children, Chris- tine, Cindy and Jerry. They divorced in 1961. In 1967, Dannie married Michaele Sherwood. They had two children, Heather and Sean. They divorced in 1979. Dannie met his future wife, Lani Hilliard, in 1983, and together, they had Drew. Dannie enjoyed watching the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves and the Portland Trail Blazers on TV. In the spring, if the weather was warm enough, he would go watch his nephew, James Nichols, coach the Knappa girls soft- ball team. He enjoyed hunting in Burns for many years and loved telling hunting stories at deer camp. Dannie was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Bessie Nichols, and a toddler brother, Bennie. Dannie is survived by his wife, Lani Nichols; brother, Jimmy (Pat) Nichols; sis- ters, Gloria Regan, Jo Ellen Guilroy and Linda (Ken) Scheuner; and his children, Christine (Paul) Zartman, Cindy (Steve) Blackman, Jerry Painter, Heather Nich- ols, Sean (Kandace) Nich- ols and Drew (Georgina) Nichols. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Cody, Kyle and Caleb Zartman, Tayler Blackman, Brooklyn Painter, Seth Colson, Sara Colson, Graden Nichols and Bennet Nichols; four great-grand- children; plus multiple nieces and nephews, as well as extended family and friends. A body was found in the rocks at Little Beach in Gearhart on Tuesday during heavy rain and high surf. Body found at Little Beach in Gearhart Seaside Signal A man identified as Ott Custer washed up on rocks in Gearhart on Tues- day afternoon amid heavy rain and high surf. Police Chief Jeff Bow- man said the body was reported at 1:32 p.m. by two young people near Lit- tle Beach. Bowman contacted Eliz- abeth DeVisser, Clatsop County’s death investigator, who responded to the scene. The Gearhart Fire Department assisted in retrieving the body from the rocks. Bowman described the person as an older white male in heavy clothing and a rain suit. It is unknown how long Custer was in the water. He was transported to a funeral home for identification and cause of death. DeVisser said the med- ical examiner’s office is seeking information regard- ing Custer. Three teens charged with gun possession Seaside Signal Three teenagers were arrested Monday in Sea- side after gunshots were fi red on the beach. Police responded to the beach near the Turnaround just after 1 a.m. and found two teenage boys with a pistol. Another teenage boy was found in a parked vehicle with a pistol. All three teenag- ers, ages 14, 15 and 16 years old, were arrested on charges related to unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful use of a fi rearm, recklessly endangering another per- son, carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. Offi cials did not release the juveniles’ names, and said none of them live in Clatsop County. All three were taken to a juvenile detention facility.
