ladstone took down a dynasty
the night of March 7. Or the
closest thing to a dynasty in 4A
boys basketball.
The Gladiators built a big second
half lead over Seaside, lost it, then
got it back at the end to score a 71-67
win over the Gulls in a fi rst round
state playoff game at Gladstone.
It will be the fi rst time in fi ve
years that the state championship
game will not include Seaside, while
Gladstone advances to the state tour-
nament in Forest Grove, where the
Gladiators will play a quarterfi nal
game against No. 1-ranked Marist
Catholic.
And with fi rst round losses to both
Banks and Seaside, it will be the fi rst
time since 2014 that the state cham-
pionship game will be without a team
from the Cowapa League.
The Seaside-Gladstone matchup
was a 3-point shooting contest that
turned into a survival of the fi ttest
contest, with key players fouling out
for both teams down the stretch of
the high-scoring affair.
With a combined six 3-pointers
from Seaside’s Brayden Johnson,
Ledger Pugh and Everest Sibony in
the fi rst half, the Gulls held an early
15-7 lead.
But the Gladiators showed that
they also have some fi repower, with
fi ve treys in the fi rst half for an even-
tual 31-29 lead, the sixth lead change
of the fi rst half, and the last one until
the fi nal two minutes of the game.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Bran-
don Wanlass and Ethan Bulisco had
the Gladiators in front 47-36 early in
the third quarter.
Seaside answered with back-to-
back treys from Beau Johnson, while
two long range bombs by Sibony and
a jumper from Ryan Hague gave the
Gulls a 64-63 lead with just under
two minutes left.
Baskets from Jeremy De Voe and
Sabastian Peiffer put Gladstone in
front, 67-64, before Hague drilled a
clutch 3-pointer to tie the game with
just under a minute remaining.
A Seaside turnover forced the
Gulls to foul, and the Gladiators
showed their composure at the free
throw line, as De Voe and Wanlass
made four straight in the fi nal 22 sec-
onds to clinch the win and a trip to
the state tournament.
Hague led the Gulls with 17
points, followed by Brayden John-
son with 14. De Voe had 21 points,
Wanlass added 18 and Peiffer scored
14 for the Gladiators.
With the win, Gladstone snapped
a six-game losing streak to the Gulls
going back to 2014-15. Seaside’s
six straight victories included play-
off wins over Gladstone in 2017 and
2018.

More success for the Seaside Riptide
sixth and seventh grade girls basketball
teams in local tournaments, the weekend of
Feb. 29-March 1.
The seventh-graders went 4-0 over two
days to win their tournament, while the
sixth-grade team was 3-1 to fi nish second.
For the seventh graders, the Riptides
opened with a decisive 51-13 win over Cas-
tle Rock Saturday at Clatsop Community
College. Seaside followed with a 36-25 win
over the Oregon Basketball Club.
The tournament moved to Broadway
Middle School for Sunday’s games, and
the Riptide scored two more wins on their
home court, 23-15 over Forest Grove and
a 22-19 win against the Oregon Basketball
Club.
Seaside’s seventh grade team is coached
by Ashley Flukinger, and includes team
members Malory Dundas, Jaya Homan,
Lydia Klumper, Madi Olson, Andrea Ortega,
Izzy Schmidt, Cheyenne Stock, Katie Jo
Strimple-Fields and Madison Wredge.
The sixth grade Riptides split a pair
of games Saturday, beating Forest Grove
31-25, followed by a 29-16 loss to the Ore-
gon Basketball Club.

Seaside bounced back with two wins
Sunday at Broadway Middle School over
Castle Rock (34-14) and the Oregon Bas-
ketball Club (26-17).
Cleats donated for local youth

The Sunset Empire Park and Recreation
District recently received a donation of new
athletic footwear to be made available to local
youth who participate in after-school sports.
The shoes are adult sizes and range from
2½ to a few 13½ in both men’s and wom-
en’s styles. Each youth will receive one pair
per youth on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis
on Saturday, March 14, at the Bob Chisholm
Community Center in Seaside from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. The community center is located at
1225 Avenue A.
Youth are limited to one pair of shoes.
The sixth graders advanced to the state
tournament the following weekend in Red-
mond, where the Riptides went 2-2. The
two losses came by a combined six points.
Mountain cyclists and volunteers are
making quick work building trails at
Klootchy Creek, North Coast Trail Alli-
ance President Steven Blakesley told
members of the Seaside Downtown
Development Association Thursday, Feb.
27.
“We have fi ve trails fi nished and three
or four more ready by summer,” he said.
“We’re doubling our mileage very fast.”
In late September, the North Coast
Trail Alliance began clearing out future
riding areas on Lewis and Clark Timber-
lands north of Klootchy Creek County
Park, six miles of downhill, single-track
trail to start, with a goal of expanding
to 40 connected miles over the next few
years.
Trails are one-way up — designed to
reach the top of Twin Peaks at an ele-
vation of between 1,500 and 1,600 feet
— and one-way down. Eventually trails
could connect directly to the city.
“This is a destination mountain bike
area,” he said. “Visitors say, ‘Do you
have any idea of what you’re sitting on
up here?’ The views, the topography are
just perfect.”
Started in 2015, the North Coast Trail
Alliance is a subchapter of the Port-
land-based, 1,200-member Northwest
Trail Alliance, which provides insurance
and acts as a fi scal agent.An expanded
parking lot, a new information kiosk
and trails leading to forestry land have
also been added, along with picnic tables
installed with the help of Boy Scout
Troop 642.
The county plans to add vaulted toilets
similar to others seen in state parks.
“The whole park has been repurposed
and cleaned up,” he said.
Two big bike companies are helping
the trail alliance raise money, he added.
“They want their name on our trails. They
want to help us promote. And that’s not
an easy feat, to get these folks looking at
what we’re doing.”
