A8 FRIDAY January 17, 2020 Spring Sports SeasideSignal.com Gulls snaps losing skid with win over Estacada, 82-51 Seaside Signal The Estacada Rangers were feeling pretty good in the opening minute of the third quarter, trailing Sea- side by just one point, 35-34. But after that, it was all Gulls, who went on a 47-12 run for an eventual 82-51 win over Estacada in a non- league boys basketball game Jan. 10. Seaside snapped a two- game losing skid by pound- ing the Rangers on the boards and at both ends of the floor in the second half. Estacada had led 23-19 midway through the sec- ond quarter, but a pair of 3-pointers by Beau Johnson put Seaside in front to stay at 27-23. After Estacada’s Nathan Hagel opened the third period with a 3-pointer, the Gulls went on a 15-0 run, highlighted by 3-point bombs from Ryan Hague and Johnson. Seaside continued the onslaught into the fourth quarter, with three 3-point- ers by Brayden Johnson as the Gulls scored 23 points or more in each of the final three quarters. Hague led Seaside with 21 points, with Brayden Johnson scoring 19 and Beau Johnson adding 14. Stephen Snyder chipped in 11 for the Gulls. Estacada (3-8) had lost three of its last four games, with the three losses coming to Tillamook, Valley Catho- lic and Seaside. Dayton 53, Gulls 47 The marquee matchup in Oregon nonleague boys bas- ketball Jan. 7 took place in Dayton, where the Pirates hosted Seaside in a con- test between a pair of top 10 teams. Coming off a loss at home to Marist, the No. 8-ranked 4A Gulls bounced back with a big first quar- ter, but the Pirates — the No. 1-ranked team at the 3A level — fought back, then finally took a late lead and held on for a 53-47 win over Seaside. It’s the first time the Gulls lost back-to-back games in the same season since 2017-18, when Seaside lost consecutive road games to Banks and Scappoose. The Gulls came out firing in Tuesday’s showdown, and behind baskets from Beau Johnson, Conner Langmo, Brayden Johnson and a 3-pointer from Ryan Hague, Seaside built first quarter leads of 9-0, 13-1 and 17-5. But six-foot Dayton soph- omore Tyler Spink woke up the Pirates’ crowd with three 3-pointers in a three-minute span midway through the first half, and Dayton had closed to within 23-21 at halftime. Holding a slim 32-31 late late in the third quar- ter, the Gulls appeared ready to pull away with back-to- back triples from Hague and Everest Sibony for a 38-31 advantage. The Pirates rallied again with buckets from Kody Fuller and Dawson Ashley, before consecutive scores from Hague pushed Sea- side’s lead to 44-39. Two free throws from Ashley tied the game at 45-45 with 2:50 remaining, and the Pirates took their first lead, 48-47, with 2:20 left on a three-point play from Payton Garrison. That sparked Dayton to an 8-0 run to finish the game. Spink led all scorers with 22 points, while Ryan Hague had a team-high 21 for the Gulls. Brayden Johnson scored eight and Langmo added six in a starting role for Seaside. Seaside hosts annual Pac Rim tournament By GARY HENLEY Seaside Signal C oastal wrestling — or the entire state, for that matter — belongs in the hands of the Tillamook Cheesemakers. Last year’s 4A state champions, the Cheesemakers racked up 272 points to win the 2020 Pacific Rim Armed Forces Tournament, held Jan. 10-11 at Seaside High School. With its first Pac Rim team title since 1997, Tillamook had three individual champions, with two second-placers and two thirds. In records that go back to 1990, the 272 points scored by the Chee- semakers was the most ever in the Pac Rim tournament, topping the 269 scored by Estacada in 206. Scappoose was a distant second with 203.5 points. Among the local schools, Ilwaco was sixth (120 points), fol- lowed by Warrenton (10th, 83.5), Seaside (13th, 71), Knappa (16th, 34) and Astoria (17th, 27.5). “The tournament was very com- petitive this year,” said Warrenton coach Corey Conant, whose 3A wrestlers had to battle against the likes of 6A Tigard, 5A Scappoose, and the Cheesemakers. “Most brackets featured pre- liminary matches due to large numbers,” he said. “We wrestled some close matches and learned a lot.” The hometown wrestlers had most of their success in the upper weights. Seaside senior Luke Nelson gave the host team an individual title at 220 pounds. Nelson opened with a 10-2 major decision over Tillamook’s Jackson Contreras, then pinned his next three opponents: Ray- mond Helm of Scappoose (1:34), Yamhill-Carlton’s Dylan McInnis in the semifinals (4:53), and a 3:40 pin against Estacada’s Nico Win- sor in the title match. Nelson ran his season record to 15-1. At 195 pounds, Warrenton’s Sam Irwin won his first four matches, which included an 11-9 sudden victory over Jose Evange- lista Villa of White Salmon in the quarterfinals. Irwin followed with a semifinal tie-breaker win, 6-4, against Yam- hill-Carlton’s Mason Dailey. In the championship, Neah- Kah-Nie’s Travis Bennett pinned Irwin in 3:19, only the fourth loss of the season for Irwin. And at 285 pounds, Astoria’s Skylar Smith scored 21.5 of his team’s 27.5 points with a third place finish. Smith suffered a semifinal loss to Cutter Sandstrom of Scappoose, but bounced back with consola- tion wins over Michael Rodda of Ilwaco (fall, 4:03), and a techni- cal fall (4:29, 15-0) against Tilla- mook’s Perry Reeder in the third- place match. Warrenton’s Nic Pior added a fourth place finish for the Warriors at 145. Teammate Austin Atwood wrestled seven matches and went 4-3 for sixth place at 120. Bruce Dustin Lilli Taylor led Seaside in a comeback win at Warrenton. Lady Gulls defeat Estacada, Warrenton Seaside Signal Lilli Taylor scored 26 points, and Seaside led from start to finish at win- less Estacada in a non- league girls basketball game Jan. 10. The visiting Gulls went on a 15-1 run midway through the second half on their way to an easy 56-33 victory over the Rangers. Seaside improved to 6-6, while Estacada — ranked 34th out of 34 teams — dropped to 0-11. The Rangers had their moments, rallying from an early 10-1 deficit and pull- ing to within 17-15 with 4:40 left in the first half. But sparked by consec- utive scores from Taylor, Seaside finished the first half on an 8-0 run for a 25-15 lead at the break. The teams traded hoops for the first half of the third quarter, before the Gulls started scoring off steals and turnovers to build an insurmountable lead. Taylor and Jadah Doney both had baskets off steals, and Seaside built an even- tual 25-point lead. Taylor scored nine of her 26 in the final period. Ruby Douglas was Sea- side’s only other player in double figures, with 10 points, while Tristyn McFadden added seven. “All wins are good wins, someone said, and can’t say I’d argue with that,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “Lilli and Ruby kind of saved the day for us, and Tristyn has played some nice floor games recently.” Douglas had four assists and 12 of Seaside’s 30 rebounds, while the Gulls hauled in 12 offensive boards and finished with 13 steals. Seaside was 0-for-7 from the 3-point line and 8-for-20 on free throws, but shot 46 percent from the field (24-of-52).
