ArtWalk features exhibits inspired by the natural world Seaside Signal Gearhart’s First Satur- day Art Walk takes place from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3. Wander through town and enjoy refresh- ments and art from partic- ipating merchants. A Great Gallery, 576 Pacifi c Way, 503-709- 2840, agreatgallery.com: It’s time to celebrate the beach. Pastel artist and gal- lery owner Susan Thomas has captured that essence in her new piece. Refresh- ments and chocolate will be served. Pacifi c Crest Cot- tage – 726 Pacifi c Way – 503-738-6560: Pacifi c Crest Cottage hosts Denise Monaghan, a local artist and graduate of Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Monaghan is inspired by the natu- ral world and captures the spirit of animal imagery. “Eyes have the same func- tion in all organisms, but the eyes of animals tell silent stories.” Meet Monaghan during Art Walk. The Natural Nook, 738 Pacifi c Way, 503-738- 5332, naturalnook65@ gmail.com: The gallery represents more than 20 talented local consignment artists year- round. Stop in to see their latest endeavors. Trails End Art Associa- tion, 656 “A” Street, 503- 717-9458, trailsendart. org: Trail’s End Art Asso- ciation invites the public to its 69th Annual Judged Show. This is an opportu- nity to view the best work of many regional artists. The distinguished judges this year are pro- fessional artist and Asto- ria’s Imogen Gallery owner, Teri Sund; profes- sional artist and Neskow- in’s Hawk Creek Gallery owner, Michael Schlicting and Astoria professional fi ne arts photographer, Dr. Dwight Caswell. The show also celebrates the artists work as it creates an oppor- tunity for the community to purchase original art at a reasonable price. The show runs Aug. 3-24 with a gala and open- ing reception from 2-5 p.m. during Art Walk. Cash and gift awards will be pre- sented to artists at 3 p.m. Saturday. The show can also be seen 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday–Sunday. The fi lm shoot lasted 18 days, including three days in and around Portland, on the coast — including Man- zanita, Arch Cape and Hug Point — and Seaside. “It was so great to shoot in this area, not only for the incredible natural beauty, but also for the welcom- ing reception we got from everyone,” he said. “Every- one was so supportive. Half the people we talked to were artists themselves. It was so fun.” The story follows Daphne (DeBose), who moves in with her boyfriend, Roger (Shingledecker), when he inherits his childhood beach house. The two decide to start a family and a new life, but when they run into a local woman who works at the arcade, Daphne real- izes Roger hasn’t been com- pletely honest about his romantic past. Now Daphne must risk everything to fi ght for her relationship, and her life. Zalutsky said he had “so much fun” making “Seaside.” “I hadn’t made a movie in Oregon before, so it was just incredible to be able to do that in my home state with friends and family around,” he said. “My dad came to the set one day to watch, which he hadn’t done before, so that meant a lot to me.” Zalutsky credited his “fantastic crew” of pro- ducer Alyssa Roehrenbeck; cameraman Phil Ander- son; sound designer Quen- tin Chiappetta; and editors Maeve O’Boyle and Jordan Montminy. Jordan Beswick and Simon Max Hill cast the fi lm; the music is by Megan Diana McGeorge “We had great support from Tim Williams at the Oregon Film Commission,” childhood locations, Fun- land! in downtown Seaside. “They were so welcom- ing and nice,” Zalutsky recalled. “We shot on the beach. We shot in the Sea- side police station. It was amazing! We would never have the money to shoot in these places in New York. It just wouldn’t have been possible.” Zalutsky relayed that for a couple of scenes, includ- ing the most dramatic ones, they shot in a large cave at Hug Point. “I wrote the script with that cave in mind, but then didn’t even think that a cave on the coast might have com- plications from the tides,” he said. “So we had to sched- ule those scenes really care- fully, haul a bunch of lights and other equipment from the parking lot to the cave, and make sure we did it all within the few hours we had before high tide.” While the scenes “look amazing,” he doubts he will ever shoot in a “tide-depen- dent” cave again. “Seaside” was a “micro budget fi lm,” he said. “We raised a portion of the budget from a small group of investors, my husband and I put in some money, we got a lot of in kind donations from vendors in Portland and the Coast, a lot of donated loca- tions, and we also did a Kickstarter campaign to fi n- ish the movie.” Zalutsky is proud of his cast and crew’s accom- plishments outside of his fi lm. Ariana DeBose is cur- rently shooting the role of Anita in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” and was an original cast member on Broadway in “Hamilton.” Steffanie Leigh is from Tal- ent, Oregon, and played the most recent Mary Poppins on Broadway. The score was created by Megan Diana McGeorge, a Portland musician who cre- ated the “Piano, Push, Play” series in PDX. “Seaside” is getting a digital release from Gravitas Ventures; you can check it out at iTunes, https://apple. co/31agh9H.
