Traditional undergrad- uate students must earn a 3.5 grade point average or above on 12 or more hours of graded work to earn a spot on the dean’s list. Blodgett is a sopho- more majoring in elemen- tary education. Seaside Elks announce essay contest winners The Astorian Janet Todd Cole Biamont, Frida Ruff, Briana Boyd and Kara Spell, recipients of scholarships presented by Lighthouse Jazz Society. Lighthouse Jazz Society sponsors scholarships Seaside Signal Two Seaside High School students, Cole Biamont and Frida Ruff, received scholarships from the Lighthouse Jazz Society to attend Blaine Harbor Music Festival Jazz Camp in Blaine, Washington. Biamont, a rising sophomore, plays baritone and alto saxophones. Drummer Ruff started at age 5 play- ing piano before she transitioned to drums. The students will study in the daytime, and perform in the evening. Briana Boyd and Frida Spell also received Lighthouse Jazz Society scholarships to join students across the state with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music on a European tour for 16 days this summer. Among destinations, they will London, Paris and Switzerland. Boyd and Spell are member of the high school’s symphonic band and jazz ensembles. Boyd, a rising junior, plays flute and piccolo. She started playing flute in sixth grade, and plays in the sym- phonic band. Spell, a guitarist, will be a senior at the high school this fall. She performs in both the symphonic and jazz bands. John Johnson, 15, from Ilwaco High School, Ilwaco, Washington, also received a scholarship. He is a recipi- ent of LHJS scholarship to attend Cen- tral Washington University Jazz Camp in July. The Lighthouse Jazz also donated $1,000 to the Seaside High School Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Terry Dahlgren in May. AAUW scholarship awards include Seaside seniors Seaside Signal The Seaside American Association of University Women Scholarship Foun- dation announced winners of the annual June Stromberg scholarship. They include Seaside graduating seniors Cori Biamont, Majestik DeLuz, and Jenna Logan. Winner of the scholarship for a woman returning to col- lege at least five years after high school graduation is Katherine (Kate) Bardonski. Each June Stromberg winner excelled scholasti- cally while also holding jobs. Additionally, they each par- ticipated in numerous school and community activities. Cori Biamont was described as energetic, ambi- tious, determined, and an organized leader. She seeks to become a pediatric or sur- gical nurse. AAUW Kathleen Bardonski, winner of an AAUW scholarship for women returning to college. Majestik DeLuz was described as positive, respon- sible, industrious, creative, and goal-driven. She will pursue training to serve as a mental health professional. Jenna Logan was described as responsible, analytic, friendly, mature, and motivated. She wishes to prepare herself for a career as a medical examiner. Kate Bardonski has always loved costume design, having made cos- tumes for community events and Halloween. Leaving a successful job to advance her education, she wants to pre- pare herself for a career in costume design for profes- sional productions. She will begin her training at Clatsop Community College. Her employers describe her as an eager and quick learner, a natural leader, and one with a strong work ethic. The scholarship foun- dation was formed specifi- cally to generate funds for local scholarships, with over $20,000 in awards dis- tributed so far. June Strom- berg was a longtime Sea- side AAUW member who strongly valued education for women. In her honor, the foun- dation annually awards one or more $1,000 scholar- ships to female high school seniors who meet gradua- tion requirements, are the first female in the immedi- ate family unit to have the opportunity to complete a degree program, are a good citizens of school and local community, demonstrate financial need, and have an academic plan. In addition, the foundation awards a “Women Returning to School” scholarship each year. Eligible women must have been out of high school for at least five years and be enrolled in a two or four- year college program. One or more $2,000 scholarships are awarded annually to suc- cessful applicants. Donations should be directed to the Seaside AAUW Scholarship Foun- dation at P. O. Box 693, Sea- side, OR, 97138. On May 30, Exalted Ruler Jim Fettig and Past Exalted Rulers Jeanne Uzelac and Jan Jack- son of the Seaside Elks Lodge No. 1748 attended a Gearhart Elementary School awards ceremony for the Elks’ essay contest winners. Fettig presented a plaque and $25 to Landon Nofield, and a plaque and $50 to Sophia Bucher. Both students submitted essays on the topic, “What Makes You Proud of America?” Their essays were for- warded to the Northwest District and to the Oregon State Elks Association. Joe Woods, lodge Americanism chairman, presented the essay contest to the schools. Shiqi Dotson earns degree at George Fox University Seaside Signal NEWBERG — Shiqi Dotson of Seaside was among more than 900 undergraduate, adult degree and graduate-level students who received diplomas from George Fox University this spring. Dot- son earned a master of arts in teaching. All told, 499 students received bachelor’s degrees after completing study in one of George Fox’s 41 undergraduate bachelor’s degree majors. Another 381 students received a master’s degree or a doctorate after completing study in one of the university’s graduate programs or in its seminary, and 50 students received bachelor’s degrees through the school’s adult degree program. Arts Association, gallery team up in Cannon Beach Seaside Signal The Cannon Beach Arts Association and the Portland Art Museum’s rental sales gallery are presenting a joint exhibit of regional artists from the Pacific Northwest. The exhibit, supported by a grant from the Ford Family Foundation and a sponsorship from Recol- ogy, will be on display at the Cannon Beach Gallery located at 1064 S. Hemlock Street in Cannon Beach from Wednesday, June 19, to Sunday, Aug. 4, with an artist’s reception held on June 22, from 6 to 7:30. The artwork submitted for this exhibit includes art- ists from Cannon Beach, Portland and the Willamette Valley and showcases the best examples of regional art from established artists whose work can be found in the Portland Rental Sales Gallery ranging in medi- ums such including paint- ing, illustration, photogra- phy, and sculpture. The proceeds of the work will support the exhibiting artists and the Cannon Beach Arts Asso- ciation programming. The exhibit and reception is free and open to the public.
