B4 • Friday, March 15, 2019 | SEAGULLS BASKETBALL • SPECIAL SECTION EDITORIAL This dynasty to be continued By GARY HENLEY Seaside Signal ‘Y ou can’t fi nish fi rst every year.” That would be the simple way of describing the 2018-19 season for the Seaside boys basketball program. Ironically, those were also the words from Seaside coach Bill Westerholm, following a 62-56 loss to Banks in the 2019 state championship game March 9 at Forest Grove High School. The Gulls made yet another appearance in the title game — their fourth in four years — but came up short to those darn Braves, who defeated Seaside in the football championship the previous November. In basketball, the 4A state title game is quickly becoming known as the “Cowapa League championship.” Because for the third straight year, the title game came down to two Cowapa schools, with Seaside defeating Valley Catholic in the previous two. Sometimes you do fi nish fi rst. This year’s loss did not diminish another great season for the Gulls. Along the way, Seaside knocked off Class 6A teams South Eugene and Bend, and defending 5A state cham- pion Thurston. In consecutive days, no less. The Gulls reeled off 17 straight wins before a loss at Banks in the league sea- son fi nale. Seaside bounced back with a win over Banks in a tie-breaker for the No. 1 seed, then stormed through the state playoffs with a win at home over Sisters, fol- lowed by two solid victories over North Marion and Stay- ton in the fi rst two rounds of the state tournament. Meanwhile, this year’s senior class is just a part of an amazing six-year run for Seaside boys sports. Since 2014, the Gulls have two state championships each in basketball and golf and one in cross country, along with two runner-up fi nishes in bas- ketball and a second place in football last fall. To quote a Seaside phrase about winning, “it’s all they know.” In basketball, they’ve won 86.8 percent of the time over the last four years. And with key athletes returning and more coming in, the winning will continue. This dynasty is just beginning. Gulls out of the gate with two wins at state By GARY HENLEY Seaside Signal After their performance in the quarterfi nal and semifi nal rounds of the state tournament, a three- peat looked like it was in the bag for the Seaside Gulls. They opened by crushing North Marion, 75-50, in the Elite Eight. It was Seaside’s second vic- tory of the season (and fi fth in fi ve years) over the Huskies, a common nonleague opponent for the Gulls. Seaside won at North Marion in January, 58-57. Seaside set the tone early in the rematch. The Gulls trailed 8-6, but then scored nine straight points, which included three scores from Ryan Hague, who capped the run with a three-point play. Duncan Thompson closed the fi rst quarter with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and Seaside’s lead was soon 29-17. Hague had 19 of his 29 points in the fi rst half, as the junior fi nished the second quarter with a tip-in at the buzzer to give the Gulls a 35-24 halftime advantage. The Huskies tried to keep it close — a 3-pointer from Grant Henry had North Marion within 41-33 early in the third quarter — but Seaside answered with a 9-0 run to put the game on ice. Brayden Johnson and Beau Jeff Ter Har Brayden Johnson congratulates Gulls’ teammates in the game against North Marion. Johnson had back-to-back scores, followed by baskets from Hague and Chase Januik for a 50-33 lead. And the Gulls didn’t let up in the fourth quarter. Seaside poured it on and was scoring at will mid- way through the period, with buck- ets from Hague, Westerholm, Beau Johnson and Januik. Seaside was a sizzling 32-for-56 from the fi eld. Hague was 14-of- 18, and Januik added 16 points for the Gulls, whose lead reached 73-46. Gulls 49, Eagles 40 On to the Final Four, where the Gulls locked up their fourth straight trip to the champion- ship game with a 49-40 win over Stayton. The Gulls punched their ticket to the fi nal by rallying from an early defi cit, taking a 23-22 lead at halftime, then taking control in the fourth quarter. Stayton grabbed a quick lead to open second half on a 3-pointer by Riley Nichol for a 25-23 advan- tage. That would be Stayton’s fi nal lead of the day. The Eagles featured 6-foot-8 Kaleb Anundi and the 6-7 Nichol, but Seaside makes a living off beating bigger teams. The Gulls just moved their game outside a little. After making fi ve 3-pointers in the fi rst half, Seaside drained three in the opening minutes of the third quarter, including back-to-back bombs by Payton Westerholm and another from Beau Johnson that gave the Gulls a commanding 36-27 lead. The Eagles tried to keep it close — and they did, for a while. Consecutive scores by Micah Jenkins had Stayton within 38-37 early in the fourth quarter, but that’s as close as the Eagles would get. Westerholm scored on a fl oating jump shot, Ryan Hague made two free throws, Westerholm converted four straight, and the Gulls held on from there.
