SEASIDE SCORES A WIN OVER ASTORIA By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian Seaside Wrestling Gio Ramirez, Wrestling T he Astoria boys basketball team was facing long odds Tuesday night at Seaside. Over their previous 32 home games, the Gulls had a 31-1 record on their home court. And the two- time defending state champions weren’t planning on opening the new league season with a loss. Seaside had things locked up after one quarter with the Fishermen, leading 23-6 on its way to an easy 83-43 win. A flurry of 3-pointers from Brayden John- son, Beau Johnson and Chase Januik helped the Gulls extend their lead to 31-6, before Astoria closed the first half with 3-point shots from Ian Hunt and Marcus Soderstrom. But any hopes of an upset the Fishermen had at halftime quickly disappeared in the opening minutes of the third quarter, as Sea- side opened the second half on a 20-4 run. The Gulls finished with five players in double figures, led by Januik with 21 and Brayden Johnson, who had 19 points off the bench. Ryan Hague added 12, followed by Duncan Thompson and Payton Westerholm with 10 apiece. Hunt and Soderstrom had 13 points each for Astoria, which was missing Josh Olson from the lineup. Aidan Tice/Gio Ramirez, Wrestling Tice won the championship at 145 pounds and Ramirez was the champion at 170 pounds in Seaside’s annual Pac Rim wrestling tournament, Jan. 11-12. The two wrestlers were both 4-0, helping the Gulls to a sixth-place finish. GIRLS BASKETBALL North Marion clips Seaside; Gulls defeat Gladstone, Estacada Seaside Signal The Seaside Lady Gulls gave No. 4-ranked North Marion a scare, but the Hus- kies managed to squeak out a nonleague girls basketball win Jan. 11 on their home floor with a low-scoring 31-24 victory over Seaside. North Marion’s 31 points tied their lowest offensive out- put of the season. The Hus- kies were coming off a 50-31 loss to Banks six days earlier. Meanwhile, Seaside had to rally from a 20-9 third quarter deficit, with Morgan Blodgett and Annaka Garhofer leading a comeback that brought the Gulls to within 22-20 early in the fourth period. Following a 3-pointer by North Marion’s Mya Ham- mack, Garhofer drained another trey that had Seaside within 27-24 with 1:43 left. Katie Ensign answered with a 3-pointer for the Hus- kies, and North Marion held on for the win. Garhofer led the Gulls with 10 points, while Taylor had 10 rebounds. Seaside coach Mike Hawes called it “a pretty solid effort against a good team. We have kind of fig- ured out who we are, which is nice for league. Hopefully it will be enough to surprise some people. “We’ll see if we’re ready for league, ‘cause here it comes.” Seaside 58, North Marion 57 SEA (58): Chase Januik 17, Hague 11, Thompson 8, Westerholm 7, Br.Johnson 6, Meyer 5, Be.Johnson 4, Pugh, Snyder. We should have worn chain mail and body armor.” It was a physical game, Seaside’s Lilli Taylor and Emy Kiser combined for 31 points Jan. 4 — more than enough to beat Estacada by themselves, as the Gulls powered their way to a 64-25 win over the Rangers in a nonleague girls basket- ball game. Taylor scored 16 points (8-for-11 from the field), and also had seven assists and six steals. The Gulls (8-5 overall) were taking the ball away with ease against the Rang- ers (1-9), as Seaside finished with 18 steals.
