Seaside tops Woodburn
at Stayton Classic

T
he Seaside Lady Gulls won
one and lost two in the SCTC
Holiday Classic, Dec. 27-29 at
Stayton High School.
Salem Academy scored a 49-26
win over the Gulls in a consolation
final Saturday.
“We actually were very ready
and had a great first half,” said Sea-
side coach Mike Hawes, whose team
trailed 24-18 at halftime.
The Gulls, however, did not score
in the third period, as Salem Academy
opened up the lead.
Annaka Garhofer and Emy Kiser
scored eight points apiece to lead
Seaside.
After Thursday’s 58-34 loss to Cot-
tage Grove, the Gulls bounced back
with a 60-42 come-from-behind win
over Woodburn.
“Again, we came out slow but even-
tually wore them down,” Hawes said.
“Morgan Blodgett had 18 (points) and
made shots all over.”
Lilli Taylor added 14 points and
Kiser scored 13 for the Gulls.
Elma 37, Gulls 30
SEASIDE — The Elma girls bas-
ketball team enjoyed winning last
year’s Seaside Holiday Classic so
much, they came back and did it again.
After beating Astoria in last year’s
title game of the tournament, the
Eagles held off a big challenge from
Seaside in the Dec. 22 championship
contest, 37-30.
The Eagles had to overcome
some heavy foul trouble and a defen-
sive-minded Seaside team, by break-
ing a 23-23 tie in the fourth quarter
and outscoring the Gulls 14-7 over the
final six minutes.
With the help of seven points in
the first quarter from Quin Mikel
(tournament Most Valuable Player),
the Eagles held a 15-6 lead after one
period.
But the Gulls turned the tide, in a
hurry.
Forcing turnovers and drawing
fouls, Seaside went on a 10-2 run in
the second quarter, pulling to within
17-16 at halftime. Ruby Douglas
highlighted the run with two scores
underneath, and teammate Alyssa
Goin closed the half with a late basket.
Seaside tied the game at 19-19 on
a jump shot by Emy Kiser in the third
quarter, but that was Seaside’s only
field goal of the second half until Mor-
gan Blodgett scored with 43 seconds
left in the game, with the rest of Sea-
side’s points coming at the free throw
line.
Kaelyn Burgher led the Eagles
with 10 points, followed by Kali
Rambo with nine and Jalyn Sackrider
with eight, as all three finished with
four fouls.
Lilli Taylor had a game-high 11
points for the Gulls, and made the
all-tournament team along with team-
mate Emy Kiser.
“We lost to a good team, and we
had a five-point third quarter where
we missed some easy shots and free
throws that might have made a dif-
ference,” said Seaside coach Mike
Hawes. “But the growth this team has
shown all season long has been awe-
some. We said all along we’re not sure
who we are, but maybe we’re going to
be pretty good.
“We need to continue to take care
of the ball, and make shots,” he said.
“Ruby Douglas is starting to become a
very good post.”
Seaside reached the title game
with a 38-28 win Friday over Cottage
Grove. Blodgett and Annaka Garhofer
scored nine points each for the Gulls,
who built a 24-12 lead late in the sec-
ond quarter, then maintained a 10- to
12-point advantage the remainder of
the game.
Seaside opened the tournament
against winless Crook County in a late
matchup Dec. 20, and the Lady Gulls
pulled away in the second quarter for
an easy 44-20 win.
Emy Kiser scored 10 points and
Lilli Taylor added eight for Seaside,
which led just 4-2 after one quar-
ter. But it was 19-7 by halftime, as
the Gulls picked up second quar-
ter 3-pointers from Katie Zagata and
Tristyn McFadden.
From there, the Gulls did what they
do best — force turnovers and dom-
inate the boards — and finished the
game with an 18-2 run.
