STORIA — Seven high school
swim teams gathered Dec. 8 for an
annual swim meet, held every year
to honor the memory of one young swim-
mer who died just over 20 years ago.
The Astoria Aquatic Center was the pool,
and the Astoria Fishermen were the hosts
for the 2018 Andrew Nygaard Invitational
— or, more affectionately called “Andrew’s
Meet,” by those who still remember the
young, talented swimmer who still holds
several North Coast Swim Club age group
records.
As always, the Nygaard family was
in attendance for the annual meet, an ear-
ly-season gathering that gives more than a
few District 1 teams the chance to see what
everyone else has got for the new season.
While Newport may have an eventual
say in the matter, Valley Catholic and Taft
were the most successful teams in Satur-
day’s meet, as both the Valiants and Tigers
left with a team trophy.
Valley Catholic won the girls’ team
championship with 74 points, followed by
Taft (70), Astoria (56) and Seaside (51).
And Taft swam away with the boys’ trophy,
scoring 106 points to top Valley Catholic
(70), Astoria (69) and Seaside (25).
Other competing schools were Rainier,

Tillamook and Toledo.
The Seagulls had two victories, just min-
utes apart.
Seaside freshman Nicole Blankenhorn
teamed with Kaisa Liljenwall, Cailin Ben-
nett and Anna Huddleston to win the girls’
200-yard freestyle relay in 2:05.24, edging
Tillamook at the wall.
One event later, Seaside senior Kendy
Lin swam a 1:10.88 to win the 100-yard
backstroke.
Lin added a second-place fi nish in the
200-yard freestyle (2:19.71), while Sea-
side sophomore Henry Garvin had the sec-
ond-fastest time (25.93 seconds) out of 38
entries in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle.

Gulls girls take
down Scappoose

SCAPPOOSE — Seaside out-
scored Scappoose 33-6 over the
second and third quarters Dec. 14,
sending the Gulls to an easy 55-20
win over the now-Class 5A Indians.
Emy Kiser scored 13 points to
lead the Gulls, who were 7-of-21
from the 3-point line. Ruby Doug-
las added eight points and Morgan
Blodgett fi nished with seven points
seven rebounds for Seaside, which
also had 11 steals defensively.
“We moved the ball around the
court better than ever, and our pres-
sure gave Scappoose fi ts,” said
Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “Emy
Kiser had a great all-around game
and Lilli Taylor (four points, fi ve
assists, three blocks, fi ve rebounds
and three steals) just adds such a
stabilizing presence for us. Ruby
Douglas was good, and Katie
Zagata played her best game. Lots
of kids scored and contributed.”
Eleven players scored for the
Gulls.
Gulls 42, Dayton 27
A light, defensive pressure and
a bunch of offensive rebounds was
all Seaside needed Dec. 11 against
Dayton, in a nonleague girls bas-
ketball game at the Gulls’ Nest.
It all led to a 42-27 win for the
Lady Gulls, in a game that wasn’t
even that close.
Seaside applied a toned-down
full-court press for three quar-
ters, forcing 19 Dayton turnovers
through the third quarter. And the
Gulls were collecting offensive
rebounds at will in the fi rst half, on
their way to a 23-8 halftime lead.
While just four players made
it into the scoring column for the
Pirates, the Gulls had 10 play-
ers score at least two points. Emy
Kiser and Lilli Taylor led the way
with seven points apiece, while
Morgan Blodgett and Annaka Gar-
hofer scored six points each.
Garhofer made back-to-back
3-pointers early in the second quar-
ter, and Blodgett and Taylor scored
off turnovers, helping Seaside to a
31-8 lead early in the third period.
Taylor also had fi ve assists,
while the Gulls had 13 offensive
rebounds and 11 steals.
“Dayton was without their big
(post player), so that changed the
dynamic of the game,” said Sea-
side coach Mike Hawes. “It would
have been good for us to face a tal-
ented big, cause we’ll defi nitely see
some in league.
“For the most part I’m pretty
pleased,” he said. “We did a lot
of good things, and some of our
bad things were in pursuit of the
good. Balanced scoring, everyone
played, we won … what can I say?
Life is good.”
Seaside tops Scappoose,
falls to No. 2 Stayton

STAYTON — Two lengthy
road trips in 24 hours were a bit
too much for the Seaside boys bas-
ketball team to overcome over the
weekend of Dec. 14-15.
After a 31-point win at Scap-
poose late Friday night, the Gulls
were back on the road Saturday to
the Salem area, where Seaside had
a rescheduled game with Stayton.
And the No. 2-ranked Eagles
jumped over the Gulls in the state
rankings with a 56-49 victory,
thanks in large part to their large
center.
Stayton’s 6-foot-8 senior post,
Kaleb Anundi, scored a game-high
31 points to lead the Eagles over the
Gulls.
Seaside outscored Stayton
30-21 in the middle two quarters,
but Stayton’s 35-19 advantage in
the fi rst and fourth quarters was
enough for the Eagles (6-1 over-
all) to post the win, dropping Sea-
side to 3-2.
Anundi had nine points in the
fi rst quarter, which ended in a 17-9
lead for Stayton.
Chase Januik scored 16 points
and Brayden Johnson added 14 for
the Gulls.
Seaside opened the weekend
with a decisive 83-52 win Dec. 14
over former league rival Scappoose.
The Gulls built a 45-31 half-
time lead, then began the second
half with a 13-1 run to put the game
away.
Seaside had fi ve players score in
double fi gures, led by Ryan Hague
with 17. He was followed by Chase
Januik (14), Duncan Thomp-
son (13), Payton Westerholm and
Brayden Johnson (10 apiece).
The 83 points was the sec-
ond-most scored by the Gulls
against Scappoose, behind the 89
scored by Seaside in an 89-52 win
in 2016.
Gulls 70, Dayton 34
The Seaside boys basketball
team went looking for some more
tough nonleague competition Dec.
11.
So the defending 4A state cham-
pions invited one of the contend-
ers from the 3A level to the Gulls’
Nest, as Dayton made the trip to the
North Coast.
And the Pirates ended up look-
ing like just another helpless victim
against the Gulls, who scuttled the
Pirates’ ship with a 70-34 win over
Dayton, the No. 4-ranked team in
Class 3A.
Following a road split in games
at Marshfi eld and Marist, the Gulls
are rounding into defending state
champion form, as they were 14-of-
32 from the fi eld in the fi rst half of
Tuesday’s game.
Seaside turned its 35-18 half-
time lead into a 66-26 route early
in the fourth quarter for their big-
gest lead.

Senior Chase Januik led the
Gulls in scoring in each of Sea-
side’s fi rst three games. He had
21 points and seven rebounds in
a season-opening loss at Marsh-
fi eld, followed by 17 points in
a 66-42 win at Marist. Januik
hit the 20-point mark again in a
win over Dayton.
