10A FRIDAY May 25, 2018 Spring Sports SeasideSignal.com TRACK & FIELD HOEKSTRE IS STATE CHAMPION By David Ball Seaside Signal JIM POETSCH/FOR THE SEASIDE SIGNAL E UGENE — Seaside junior Gretch- en Hoekstre won the shot put with a throw of 42-3.75 in the first round of throws. She would land the met- al ball past the 40-foot line three more times during the competition. “I felt good right from my first throw,” Hoekstre said. “It just shows the work from hundreds of hours in the weight room and working on my form.” Runner-up Kenna Woodward out of Crook County was the only other thrower to pass that line. She did it once. Hoekstre took second in the discus later in the day. • On the boys side, Seaside senior Rafi Si- bony left it all on the track in his 800-meter final, surging into the lead halfway around the final turn. He would hold onto first place for a few strides before Gladstone’s Kon- nor Hathaway responded with a burst of his own to run away with the win. “I’d rather race for first place SEASIDE HIGH SCHOOL PHOTO and leave it all Senior Rafi Sibony out there, than to collects the last shoot for second medal of his high or third and know school sports career, I had more in following a fourth me,” Sibony said. place finish in the “I wasn’t close 800-meter final in the enough to the fin- state track meet. ish to think about winning — we were stride-for-stride on the corner.” Sibony came through the finish line in fourth place and tumbled into the arms of a meet official — who happened to be his former coach, Neil Branson — who offered physical and spiritual support while point- ing to his personal-best time showing on the Hayward scoreboard. Senior Jackson Kunde had Seaside’s best score, in his final round of golf at the high school level. Seaside finishes fifth at state Seaside Signal DAVID BALL/FOR THE SEASIDE SIGNAL Seaside’s Gretchen Hoekstra stares into the pit before making an attempt in the shot put. BASEBALL Scappoose tops Seaside, 13-5 Seaside Signal SCAPPOOSE — Playing their last regular season game as a member of the Cowapa League, Scappoose posted a 13-5 win May 11 over visiting Seaside. The Indians led 6-0 after two innings, before the Gulls rallied with five runs in the top of the fifth. Scappoose answered with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Astor Landwehr had two of Seaside’s seven hits, while Isaias Jantes drove in two runs. Ter- rence Lewis and Logan Travis each had a home run for Scap- poose. REDMOND — For the fourth time in the last five years, a team from the Cowapa League grabbed the top spot in the Class 4A boys golf state tourna- ment. And it was a different team, as Val- ley Catholic became the third Cowapa school to win a state title since 2014. Seaside won state championships in 2014 and ‘15, and Scappoose won last year’s title. The Valiants improved their first round score by four strokes May 15, to finish with a 630 team score, as final round action wrapped up at the Eagle Crest Ridge Course in Redmond. Valley Catholic shot a 317 Monday, followed by a 313 score Tuesday to finish 20 strokes ahead of second-place Scappoose (650). Klamath Union (659) was third, and Mazama (668) jumped Seaside in the team standings to finish fourth, while the Gulls took fifth with a 671, two strokes ahead of sixth-place La Grande. Klamath Union senior Craig Ronne maintained his lead from Monday to finish as the tournament medalist with a 10-under-par 134. Senior Jackson Kunde was Sea- side’s top golfer, finishing in a tie for 14th with a 164. Teammate Connor Merrell dropped three strokes off his Monday round (85 to 82) for a 167, 18th overall. Seaside’s other two counting scores came from Samson Sibony (169, tied for 20th overall) and Curtis Kunde (171, 23rd). Mason Shamion rounded out the Gulls’ day with a 197. Jackson Kunde is Seaside’s lone se- nior, as Merrell, Sibony and Shamion are all juniors, and Curtis Kunde is a freshman — one of two freshmen to finish in the top 23 of this year’s tour- nament. “We made it into the final group on the final day of the tournament,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “That is what every golfer at every level strives for. It would have been nice to bring home a trophy, but to be in contention with five guys that have never played in a state tournament is still quite a feat. “The experience of playing in a state tournament is a huge advantage as the teams that beat us all had most of their players back from last year’s tournament, where they finished first, second, third and sixth,” he said.
